2000 Mustang GT 4r70w swap

Hey guys

I'm a new member here but I've been using your site for quite some time so please forgive me if this has already been posted...

So I blew the transmission in my 95 mark viii over the weekend. It was already a swap out from a 93 mark viii except it had twice the miles of the car I put it into, so I knew this day was coming. Instead of doing a rebuild, I'd rather just replace the whole thing. I did some searching and found a 2000 Mustang GT 4r70w with good miles and cheap money. My question is are the two compatible? I know they are the same tranny code and the same ratio's but with 5 years difference and two different brand names is there anything I should be looking for? Anytype of electrical issue's I should be aware of?

Again I'm new here but I'm just desperate for answers. Any kind of imput or links would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you'll need to repin the wiring harness, or maybe just swap over all your transmissions electricals to the new trans
 
+1 on the re-pin. Not sure if swapping the electrics is necessary once it has been re-pinned, but I may be wrong. One thing I would investigate is the length of the tailshaft on the newer transmission and check to see that the output shaft has the correct number of teeth. My silver 98 has a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria LX transmission and it works flawlessly. I would still be running my stock transmission on that car right now, but I was taken to the cleaners on that situation back in 2010.
 
yes, repin and swap internal solenoid , must use 95 mlps, tailshaft length is fine, you may need a different speedo gear, i did when i used a 2002 Gt trans. due to above mentioned 7/8 tooth shaft.

The trans will shift firmer 1-2, 2-3, and a "slight flair on the 3-4 shift at light throttle if you dont reprogram eec to increase 3-4 shift line pressure a little.
 
As for the solenoids, you don't have to swap the shift solenoids, but you have to switch the TCC solenoid as they are different impedance.

It'll plug in, you may have to solder the wires on the TCC solenoid - I don't know if the electric connector will be the same...

The connector on the TCC solenoid will only require trimming of the plastic in order to plug in.
 
You guys are awesome!! That definitely explains the re-pin except one thing. On the 92-97 harness there's one unused pin, and on the 98-08 there's two unused pins. Now I'm guessing its for the vehicle power wires so question is do I just splice the two wires together when I'm swapping them or just plug one into an unused port?

Sorry for all the questions guys. You all have definitely helped put me in the right direction. I've got a good handle on the majority of the work, it's just the specifics that elude me.

I read about putting a manual transmission in a mark viii ( always intrigued me ) and one of the things that had to happen was a new speedo gear. When you did yours was it like an adapter or a whole new gear?

Just heatshrink/tape up the extra power wire. The TCC solenoid will plug directly into the valvebody, however you'll have to trim the plastic on the connector of the TCC solenoid for the circuit board style wiring harness to fit correctly. It will be obvious when you do it.

If you're going from a 7-tooth drive gear to an 8-tooth or vice versa, you just replace the driven gear with one that has the appropriate number of teeth.

If he just swaps internals out, he will be removing the circuit board deal because it will then be wires only and no board. When I done the 98 into the 94, I threw that thing away. Wasn't needed anymore because all electrical parts were swapped over. When he's finished (if not re-pinning), it will look like this.

TCC (Torque Converter Solenoid) - 2 different ones!

True. It's really up to the individual's preference which way they want to tackle the issue.
 
I prefer quick and easy but I'll bust my ass to do it right :)

You can re-pin the harness if you want. Some do and some don't. I chose to just swap out the electrical internal solenoids and then use the wiring harness from the trans being removed. I think the hardest solenoid to swap was the pressure solenoid down where the shift selector is located. There is a plug there. You may or may not have to swap it, idk but I chose to swap it. Seems like I had to use something like a 20 to 22mm wrench to get things loose enough for it to be able to pull out. With everything in place, it's not coming out. Change over your MLPS and your speedo gear needs to be changed, which takes maybe 2 min. One bolt holds it in. I followed Krackers instructions to a T and it worked perfect for me.

This all makes me feel alot better. I was freaking out about the whole thing, now it seems pretty strait forward. Thanks again guys! I'll keep ya updated on how it goes. I just can't wait to be driving my car :)
 
not to jack the thread, but are we saying that a 2000 mustang gt trans will swap right in to my 98?
