    You should be able to just re-pin your 96 harness to use the newer transmissions. I had a 1997 Grand Marquis that I repinned the Bulkamp connector on the transmission to use a 2001 4R70W. Start with reading some of this and I will locate the diagrams for repinning your connectors...
