At the time when I completely drained the 23 year old Mercon with 31k miles and completely refilled with new Motorcraft Mercon V my results were exactly as you described.
$300 is far better than a ‘friend’ on a forum wanting $550 for something laying around for years and $800 from a shop trying to gouge and your happy which is the most important thing.
Amsoil is good stuff no doubt and comes with a cost. Originally the Marks came with Mercon. Mercon V is substantially better than the original Mercon (stay away from Mercon LV for these cars it is different yet).

Most of the transmission ‘act ups’ on these cars are due to the fluid. Drain all the fluid: pan, Trans, torque converter and refill with Motorcraft MerconV and throw in a new filter. You will be surprised what just MerconV does for these transmissions.
I recommend the Steeda 701-0002. They are the best quality. You have to be careful what balancer you run on these engines so you don’t wipe out the oil pump gears. The Steeda balancer is SFI approved.
You are exactly right. I lay old towels down wash the whole underneath with brake cleaner after the fact. I used a whole can just on the k-member/frame, the the side of the block and under where the oil filter is. What a mess.
No risk of overheating at all. I run a 170* thermostat with the fan commanded to come on earlier through the tune. It will idle all day in 95* without breaking a sweat let alone going down the highway. Look at the temp gauge in the pic.
