I'm wondering if the guides from the timing chain worn down and the chain ripped that metal off of a cover or something...has anyone seen that happen?

Obviously, it was torn away from something in the engine but I don't know what. It is indented and smooth on one side and rough on the other. It appears the the rough side must have gotten caught in something because of the cut marks. '02 LS 3.9 V8 137K Any help will be appreciated, thanks!
