    98 Mark VIII Base Trans

At the time when I completely drained the 23 year old Mercon with 31k miles and completely refilled with new Motorcraft Mercon V my results were exactly as you described.

    98 Mark chrome grill

$300 is far better than a ‘friend’ on a forum wanting $550 for something laying around for years and $800 from a shop trying to gouge and your happy which is the most important thing.

    98 Mark VIII Base Trans

Amsoil is good stuff no doubt and comes with a cost. Originally the Marks came with Mercon. Mercon V is substantially better than the original Mercon (stay away from Mercon LV for these cars it is different yet). If you were to have driven my car when I got it at 31 or 33k vs now at 38k...

    Coolant question

Most likely. Can’t remember it was so long ago but what stuck in my mind was at least at the time was the 2 manufacturers only.

    Fuel economy question.

Most of the transmission ‘act ups’ on these cars are due to the fluid. Drain all the fluid: pan, Trans, torque converter and refill with Motorcraft MerconV and throw in a new filter. You will be surprised what just MerconV does for these transmissions.

    Constant high revving Viii

First thing I’d do is take the IAC off and clean it very well/or replace it then go from there. You can get a new one for $38 from Rock Auto.

    PATS or complete death? Solved

Did you test the battery under a load? That kinda sounds like a weak battery.

    Fuel economy question.

Yes I run that exact pulley kit. Nothing else is needed bolt on and done. That kit even uses the stock sized belt.

    Fuel economy question.

I recommend the Steeda 701-0002. They are the best quality. You have to be careful what balancer you run on these engines so you don’t wipe out the oil pump gears. The Steeda balancer is SFI approved.

What did you do to your Mark VIII today?

You are exactly right. I lay old towels down wash the whole underneath with brake cleaner after the fact. I used a whole can just on the k-member/frame, the the side of the block and under where the oil filter is. What a mess.

What did you do to your Mark VIII today?

This is my least favorite car in the world to change oil on.

    Fuel economy question.

No risk of overheating at all. I run a 170* thermostat with the fan commanded to come on earlier through the tune. It will idle all day in 95* without breaking a sweat let alone going down the highway. Look at the temp gauge in the pic. My son and were Longhaulers in PowerTour this year with...
