can anybody tell me why i can't get a new cd player to even power up in my 98 catera?

i have a 98 catera with a couple of tens in the trunk. i've been using the factory head unit and i tried putting in a pioneer supertuner. the new radio would not even power up. anyone have any ideas? thanks
