I have the front seat cup holders that fold into the console. I few months ago mt cup holder decided to stop working correctly. When I pull it out the holder doesn't slide over far enough to stay open. When I put a drink in there it tips over when I drive. If anyone has experienced these issues and knows how to fix it I would be greatful.

I believe your problem is a bracket which has a rod going through it connecting it to the cup holder, shown in picture one. The ends have broke off like one did with mine, you can see it in the picture laying beside the bracket.
I glued mine back on with a two part epoxy. I haven't had any problems since I glued it back together in January. Make sure you let it dry for at least a day other wise it won't work. I let my sit for about two days I think. If you want you could probably order a new one or find a used one on ebay with the holder still in it and switch it out.
Heres what I did with mine: http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=17221

really, it would be much better for you to just swap the entire console out for an 01 or 02, they changed the design of the cupholders and theyre much better. the flip ones that come in 00 didnt hold a can properly and spilled some dr. pepper on my TC switch and it doesnt work anymore. would have swapped mine out by now, but i cant find a black console. new the dealership was asking 325, plus 62 for the TC switch.

How difficult is it to take out the console. Are there screws holding it in or are there some clips that I just have to pull on?

First pull the rear AC panel off by simply tugging rearward. Don't worry it'll come loose before you break it.

Then lift up on the entire top portion of the center console while simultaneously pulling back. This will allow the tabs in the front of the console to dislodge themselves from underneath the ashtray woodgrain panel. Disconnect the AdvanceTrac/TC harness and bingo...

My cup holder will open up, but where the spring connected has been broken off. So now the cupholder will not stay upright, but will fall over and close if used. I have to warn anyone who drives my car not to use the cupholder otherwise they will wind up with a wet lap.

Had the same problem last year everytime I went around a corner my beverage would go flying. So i clipped my cell phone on the e-brake handle to make it from trying to close on me.
When i got around to fixing it I noticed the spring had broke off the plastic on the end (what keeps it from closing up by itself) so I drilled another hole in the plastic and put the spring in that hole. Works great!
Nice and tight gives a nice little snap when i close it now. Nothing is moving it now. If it breaks again then i may look into an 2001 cupholder. But till then I am keeping mine. Its kinda nice being able to fold it away. when your not using it.

well if I can find that spring I may try drilling another hole. Thanks for the advice.

It wasn't broke after all. There was a golf ball stuck in the console that was preventing it from opening all of the way.:Bang

Crappy cup holders in the front and back, wish I had pay more attention to the darn things when I bought the car! Would have went for an went for '02 instead.
