02 motor issues

I just recently put an 02 engine into a 00 LS and the motor runs great, but then all of a sudden The display shows high engine temp... I pulled it into the shop and of course the coolant was shooting out. Thought it might be the thermostat and it isn't... any other ideas??? thanks!!!
