1994 STS N* Starts and dies...

I currently have the gift of trying to figure this POS out.

It has been to 4 other shops - and I'm not letting this one leave my stall until I figure it out. If not for the customer - than for myself. I have never let a vehicle leave with out fixing the problem - and I'm not gonna start. Anyways, heres the problem...

Towed in. It would start - but for only 5 seconds than die out. Sounds like the security system right? No.

Checked the resistance of the pellet AT the connector for the Pass-KeyII module and it reads fine. Checked the square wave output (For the fuel enable) and that is also fine - also there is no Security light. So I checked the fuel pressure - that's ok (50 psi). Well...got down to the injectors - and boom - that sucker is shutting down after 2-3 light ups. Went through all the OHMs for the Injectors - all between 12.0-12.3. Checked the wiring FROM the fuse (THey use 2 fuses to power JUST the injectors) and the OHMs read from 0.0-0.1.

Here's the kicker - with ALL the injectors unpluged and a Noid Light hooked up - I get a VERY-VERY weak signal to the injectors. Drivers bad? I have not told the person that owns the vehicle that it may neew a new ECU - UNTIL I'M 100% sure!! I've tried searching the web for 5+ hours now to no aviail. No codes storded. When you apply brake clean/starter fluid/etc... the engine WILL STAY RUNNING! I've checked all the grounds for the computer/engine and all are from 0.0-0.1.

Can you guys see any other problems becides the ECU?! Agian - this has been to 4 other shops for about 5 months and the customer just wants the vehicle running - any help will be greatly appreciated...

Replaced the PCM...guess what? STILL THE SAME DAMN THING!! :mad: I a'm currently up poop's creek with out a paddle...Any suggestion from the LVC.com members? Please - I'd love to find out what the hell is this thing's problem ASAP! Here is my Cell Number (313)995-8574 (blah, blah - yea I know I just posted my cell number on the internet, so what?)I really need help with this guys - I'm gonna start from square one tomorrow-this shouldn't be THAT difficult to remedy...Damn it!!!:soapbox:
 
I had an early 90s V6 that acted similar, but the run time was unpridictable (5-30 min.). The readouts indicated that power was being shut off to the ECM, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I narrowed it down to the injector circuit, but could not pinpoint a problem. I got lucky when a twin showed up on the used car lot and I swapped the fuel rail, injectors, and harness out. Neither car had a problem after. Must have been a rogue electron.

I'd check the harness and conections closely.

Look for an induction point. A wire near a coil or spark plug wire can wreak havoc.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Electrical systems can cause wrench slinging sometimes!

Let us know what you find.
 
***FOUND PROBLEM***

A MAP sensor - yes, a friggen map sensor, has gone south on me and was causing all this. I don't know why I didn't catch this earlier (Or the other shops for that manner) but with the MAP sensor unplugged - it ran!!

There where NO codes for that - so my guess that is just lost it's calabration... What ever - getting the new Map sensor tomorrow and all will be well - now time for a few drinks...:D

Thanks...but If I would of paid attention - I would of cought it the first day!!

Whatever - i'm glad it's over - and please don't forget about this. It'll come up and bite ya in the butt!! :D

Only the best mechanics kick their own ass after solving a problem 5 other shops failed to solve . Bravo!!

I have a real love/hate relationship with 'orphan' cars that have been to every shop in the area before they make it to mine and nothing feels better than fixing them. I am also amazed at some of the things other shops miss or overlook.

Yea - but what REALLY amazes me - it went to a Chevy AND a Caddy DEALER!! Comon now...they should of known better than that...

But now it overheats :lol: gotta tackle that problem tomorrow...

...This sounds all too familiar to me. I had a similar problem but luckily I have a master mechanic who used to run the Marvin K Brown service center in San Diego, CA. He now has his own shop. If anything goes wrong with my car (98 Seville SLS) I immediately take to him and he diagnoses the problem amost immediately. My car would stall at a stop light and he immediately conveyed to me that it was a crankcase sensor causing the problem. He replaced two sensors and the problem went away. Shortly thereafter the vehicle started to overheat. My mechanic replaced the radiator and all is fine on my baby and she runs great. You gotta pay to play and I don't mind because I am getting great deals from my Master Mechanic friend. I only paid $240.00 out the door, install included for my new radiator!
 
Hey Menelek2, sounds like you need to remember that guy on his birthday and I'm not talking about rot-gut. Get him the good stuff. Reward good, competent service!
