HELLO everyone I have my #1 plug that is misfiring sometimes, I have 982000 on my Navigator and all the spark plugs are ready to be changed. So thinking nothing of it, I get some quotes, people are saying $400-$600 to only change 8 plugs. They said the engine needs to be tipped or many parts taken out so labor is 3.5 hours. So I want to do it myself. I do need someone to walk me through it though. I need to know the location of the plugs so I can start on the side #1 is incase I only have enough patience to change out one side? PLEASE let me know how hard it really is if anyone has ever changed the plugs out on a 1999 navigator 5.4 liter v8.
Thank you
I want to do this ASAP :L

That does sound high. I know you should only use "motocraft" because of the treads.
If I were you I would go to f150online.com
Lots and lots of info on the std 5.4.

Use the info you get there and here and you should be fine. Makes sure you get the right plugs and use the correct torque specs. You do not want a blow out. :Bang

I have purchased the best platium motorcraft plugs and I have found out what covers to remove to get to them (I think) now since my #1 plug has been mis firing I want to change out that side first. I just have no idea where that is? Drivers side or passenger of side of the engine? Also I wanted to know if there is anything special I need to know about the coil packs etc. So thank you for any help possible.

Has anybody changed plugs on a 1999 navigator 5.4 yet?????
I've been working on 1 all day and got stuck on the last plug on the left side!
The EGR tube goes right over the top of the plug coil and it can't be removed.
I have moved the tube every witch wai I can and it won't uncover the plug coil.

I have contacted 6 Dealerships in my area and no one has done a 99 Navigator 5.4 yet!!!!

Anybody out there done one?????

Thanks.

Bob

1999 Navigator 5.4 spark plug change

Well after contacting 6 lincoln dealers and finding out none had changed plugs
in a 1999 5.4 yet, I under took the job and found out why they charge so much! :Bang

The following is what I did to get them changed.

Spark Plug Replacement
1999 Lincoln Navigator 5.4 Engine

1. Disconnect battery ground.
2. From the firewall junction block, remove positive battery cable and store
behind battery.
3. Drain radiator and remove upper radiator hose. Disconnect heater & vent
hoses to allow access to plug cover.
4. Remove 2 screws from wire support bracket at the firewall and pull up out
of the way.
5. Remove 2 bolts from plug covers and work cover free.
6. Remove plug coil assembly and plugs 1 at a time and using 5/8 plug socket
and combination of different length extensions and universal joints,
remove and replace plugs. Hook up all the hoses, reconnect positive
cables and hang the wire support bracket back on the firewall.

Now for the fun side!

7. Remove the left front wheel, using an 1 1/4 inch end wrench, back off EGR
tube nut to free the tube.
8. Remove air filter assy.
9. Loosen the lower power steering reservoir retaining screw and remove the 2 upper screws and
move reservoir out of the way.
10. Disconnect wires from the 2 EGR sensors on intake manifold then remove
sensors.
11. Using a long pry bar move the EGR tube up about 2 inches.
12. Remove plug cover and replace plugs the same way as the right side.
13. Replace EGR sensors, connectors and power steering reservoir.
14. Using some sort of hook and strap ( I used the loose end of a ratchet
strap ) hook the small tube on the EGR tube and drop the strap past the
inside of torsion bar. Pull the strap to pull the EGR tube back into place
and tighten the nut.
15. Replace air filter, wheel, coolant and reconnect battery.

changing plugs on the 99 nav

WOW!!! That does sound like a lot of work. It took me 4 hours total and that was putting everything back together. On the #8 plug the one with the EGR tube across it, all you have to do is unplug the coil pack and it comes off, then you can get to the spark plug that way. It took a little mind work but that is how I did it. I am sorry I was not able to let you know this earlier, also I never removed any part of the engine except the air filter casing.
Hope this helps???

Unplug the electrical connector from the coil first.
You will then be able to remove it.

I also used a prybar under the EGR tube and pried it up slightly. This will gain you another 1/8" to 1/4". Just enough to get it out. You do not have to disconnect anything.

Easy.

you can get that cover off just pull it out! Also the coil is a pain but you can finess it out without prying on the egr tube, they crack easy and are even more FUN to change! ahah NOT, Ive changed countless plugs on these beasts and yes I charge 3.5 - 4.0 hours to do it, its not fun.

you want to look at your coils very carefully and see if there is an engine oil on them, the spark plug seals (in the valve cover) usually leak and that ruins the coils causing misfires.

spark plugs are very rarely the cause of misfires.
