1st and 2nd gen suspension swap

I have an 04 ls V8. I need to replace my rear control arms but was wondering if I could swap them with a 1st gen like a 2002.

That was discussed here a while back. No confirmation... but it appears all dimensions are the same.

My question would be..... WHY??? 2 Gen arms are available.
