I've had my 2000 continental for a little over 6 months, and ever since the day i brought it home the check engine light has been on. It runs well on the open road, but at idle it shakes like you wouldnt believe.
the codes i get are a lean condition in bank 2, misfire in cylinder 7, and a large EVAP leak. I have looked everywhere for the leak to no avail. So i started small and replaced the gas cap which actually made the car run great and turned the light off for a week. eventually the light came back on and the shaking continued. i brought it to a dealership to get it diagnosed, and they tell me that cylinders 5 and 7 have very low compression, and that i would either need new heads on bank 2 or a whole new engine since it has to come out to change them anyway.

but i am reluctant to believe them. the thing is that the car runs absolutely fine and smooth as glass sometimes, and completely awful at others. could it possibly be a vacuum leak somewhere, or is it something larger?

any help would be greatly appreciated. i LOVE this car and really dont want to have to sell it.

ps. i have also changed all the plugs, tested all the coils, and put a new injector on cylinder 7. none of which helped.

Very interesting situation you have.

Did you perform a compression test yourself check status of cylinders 5 and 7? If the piston rings are bad, new heads will not help... If an exhaust valve is bad, the engine will pop and buck while under load. Is the car burning oil?

Is your IAC (Idle Air Control) soleniod is clean and working properly? If this is not working should have a code specific to the IAC but maybe it needs to be checked out.

The EVAP situation - did you check the fuel tank filler tube for a leak? What about checking the EVAP system for leaks?

If you find a solution, please post what it is.
