Ok folks heres the deal. I just bought a 2000 Lincoln Ls with the V8 in it. I have liked these cars for a long time and got a really good deal on this car so I couldn't pass it up. I drove the car for about 2 weeks and everything was smooth as it could possibly be. Last Tuesday I was on my way home from school and I ran into trouble. I was getting onto the on ramp and i gunned the car to merge into traffic and it just cut out. I ended up coasting to the next exit and got help to push it out of the way of traffic. The car starts and last for about 2 seconds and then it dies. It will not even idle at all, but it does indeed start and die immediantly following. Does this sound like the fuel pump went out perhaps? I am going to school for automotive technician but I am still not sure what is wrong with it. Anyone with any suggestions of what may be wrong with it would be greatly appreciated. Also, the fuel pump reset button almost looks like its constantly depressed but I am not sure what it looks like either way? Please any help would be greatly appreciated, I have only ran premium fuel in it and the previous owner did as well so I am not sure. Thanks for reading and hopefully someone has had similar problem or someone is really good with cars and can diagnose the problem. Thanks a lot!! And anyone with any help please post or e mail me at jonathanhatfield61@yahoo.com.

Try depressing the fuel- cut-off anyway. It is in the driver's side kick panel.

Did you hit a sharp bump? This happened to me once after I cut a corner too sharply and "fell" off of the curb.

Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector. If doing this enables it to continue running, you have either (1) dirty MAF sensor, (2) air leak, or (3) a bad MAF sensor.
The fuel cutoff switch is supposed to be all the way down (depressed) all the time, as you describe. It wouldn't start if that were the problem.
Also it is a bad idea to post your email address unless you like being spammed by spambots.

Still havent figured this one out guys......DAMN!!!!!!!!!

Swap the PCM relay in the trunk with another one. It's kind of a long shot with your symptoms, but it doesn't cost much to try it.

One of the next things to do would be to measure fuel pressure.

Have you tried stepping on the gas pedal partway while cranking and while it runs? May be a faulty IAC valve. The IAC valve is connected to the throttle body. Takes about 10 minutes to take off, clean (with throttle body cleaner) and reinstall. Though I think if it were IAC related, it would not start at all.

Did you actually have someone check vacuum lines?

+1 Had the same problem with my wifes car (sorento P.O.S) also had a rough idle cleaned it up like pektel mentioned and have not had any problems since.

I had this issue before and it was a really bad cat. Since it was soo messed up due to a long time with bad coils the car turns on for a couple of seconds and then it cuts off. You can check by having someone turn on the car while you check the exhaust to see if air comes out. You may have one or both clogged up. I only had 1 but I replaced both and just like you it happened to me in the highway under heavy acceleration.
