Hi I have a 2000LS V6 and the keys are cracked. I bought new keys to get reprogrammed and told it could not be done......I was told the computer was shot. I can still start it but, sometimes I can't and the anti-theft light will flash when it doesn't. Sometimes you get an E on the dash instead of D5. What do you think? Dealership wants 104/hr to check into it but, my mechanic says it's the computer. My wife doesn't want to spend the 2500 bucks to get it and installed and programmed if that is not what it is.
Thanks in advance.

I think that your "mechanic" is full of it. There are many possibilities for your problem, and the PCM is the least of them. It may well be that his scan tool isn't good enough to put the PATS into security mode to add keys. (Required if you don't have two good working keys already programmed in.)

I think that the $100 or so diagnostic charge could be worth it for you.

Thanks, I think the keys are gone. I do have new ones that are cut and ready to go to be programmed so I will make an appointment at the dealership for the $100 bucks just to see what exactly it is instead of just making an expensive blanket fix.

Update....

Hi Guys and Gals
Well, I just got back from the dealership. I gave them my new keys and old keys and voila! Within two minutes the new keys are programmed and car is starting and running like a top. How come another dealership can't figure that out? So here is the kicker.....you ready for it......$0 zero dollars!!!! I had to do something....I went to Tim Horton's for coffee and a square of donuts. Very happy! Thanks for the advice.

Now go smack your "ex mechanic" with the programmed keys and tell him to invest into some continuing education.

Okay, I didn't realize that the first "mechanic" was at a Ford dealership. I presume you had to pay the diagnostic charge at that dealership and you have an estimate for the $2500 charge. You have a very good case to go back now and get a refund for the diagnostic charge, since their diagnosis is now clearly proven wrong. I'd report this dealership to Ford, being sure to send them the estimate, as well as the paper work from the good dealership.

Awesome..

Thanks everyone and yes, will do. It started and ran like a champ all day long making sure I took the car everywhere. As I did take it everywhere one small bracket broke....It bolts to the driver side pillar and the door rides on the part so it doesn't fly away from you when you open it. We are always careful not to let the fly out so after 12 years, well 13 since it came out in 1999, things do wear out. I was wondering if anybody knows what that part is called?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
