2002 Lincoln LS ticking noise during accell.

greetings...
I recently got my hands on a 2002 lincoln ls 3.9 V8
with 20k miles on it, and i love it.
I have wanted one for a few years now and I am pretty excited about it...

so I found this webpage and figured this is the place to be.
I am new to the board and have a quick question.

when I am traveling at any speed kick it down
I get a strange ticking noice under the hood...
it seemed to stop after I shut off the AC but I have not tested this as i am to worried about what the noice actually is, with my luck i will break something.

if anybody can give me a heads up on what this could be that would be great...
 
Ticking noise or pinging noise? Both may sound the same but I'd be concerned that you may be running cheap gas. It is recommended that the LS run at least 91 octane. I have never ran anything less than that.

its seems to be a rapid ticking noise when i punch it...
i have not had it long enough to even empty the first tank of gas..
i will look into that also... i might run by the dealer and see what they say since it is still under warrenty.

I have the same ticking noise when my AC is on only. LS6, is this normal?

Very smart idea Ghost!! I would want to eliminate pinging right off the bat! You know that the dealership put in the cheapest gas they can. I would bet with you that it's pinging.

If it's the a/c, check all the lines and hoses and make sure none of them are touching the firewall, fender, etc. That can be difficult because they may only touch when the engine is torqued over. If that's the case, check your motor mounts...especially the left one.
 
mine ticks when accelerating, i use the best gas ALWAYS. took it in and they coiuldnt find anything
 
thanks for the tips I will try the gas thing and see what happens.
my wife says her 1997 escort did the same thing but only when the AC was on.

Uh no they don't, they go by the cars owners maunal, trust me I know for a fact they do, even on hybrids they put in 93. Depends on the car, I dont know what the LS calls for but what ever it does thats what it has

dealer might fill it up with the the right grade
but it could be bad quality gas and it could have had crap in it to start with
I got it used with under 20k miles.

i will burn it dry and start fresh... maybe it even has some water in it...

Add some good fuel injector cleaner too just for safe measure when you fill up.
 
It could be your exhaust manifold gaskets.......when exhaust systems have a leak somewhere you could experience a ticking noise. But, some other possibilities could be fuel injector, fuel line, oil pump, valve lifter, belt tensioner, water pump, or an obstruction of the cooling fan.

You could disconnect the first fuel line clip.......if the ticking noise is gone then you have found your problem. If not, then move onto the fuel injectors. Disconnect the injector electrical connector and listen. If noise is still present, keep looking. If it goes away, you have found your problem. If nothing is found here, move onto your belt tensioner. Check for bottoming at the end of travel and if the tensioner is the source of the noise, then you have found your problem. You should use an engine ear for all these steps(long screwdriver held up to your ear). If this isn't your problem, do the same step to the water pump. If that is the problem, replace your water pump and if not, move to the cooling fan. Check to see that your fan blade isn't hitting anything. If it is, try to repair the cooling fan. If it isn't, move onto the oil pump (oil filter adapter on the bottom of your engine. If the noise is coming from this location, install a new oil pump. If not, the next thing would be to check the valve lifter/lash adjuster using an engine ear. Im not quite sure how do to this, but if it is your valves, it is recommended you install new valve lifters/lash adjusters. If it happens to be this last concern, I wouldn't worry about it.

If i remember correctly, the LS uses solid lifters which will correct themselves over time (if the stroke is too long, they will wear themselves down and elimintate your problem). By no means am I an expert on engine internals as I leave that to mechanics. But, hopefully this information helps you along the way to finding out what your problem is. My car makes a ticking noise, but like I said before, it is because of my exhaust manifold gaskets and I am not going to worry about it at this point. It would appear you should have warranty left over on the car, so if you can work something out there, more power to you. Good luck and I hope this helps.

i need to do a few more tests.
but it only does it when i punch it an push the rpms high.
i will look to see what the rpms are and when the ticking starts.
 
update:

filled it up with 93
added a bottle of heat
added fuel injector cleaner

took it for a drive
shut the ac off
I was moving about 35mph when I punched it and kicked in the passing gear. around 3000-4000 rmp (automatic tranny mode) i heard the noice...

the more i listen to it it sounds like a rattle not a ticking or a pinging...

strange... could be an obstruction or something is loose...

my dad said "don't punch it"
my uncle said "turn the radio up"

Pinging sounds like a rattle. It may take a few tanks for the pinging to go away if it is fuel related.

i took it for a drive to have a freind of mine listen to it and i couldn't get it to do it again... so maybe it was bad gas i will update this after i get her on the highway this 4th weekend..
 
if i heard somthing ticking the first thing i would do with the ppl i know is get out run far and wait a few minuts lol
no realy i now a few ppl that yous to blow cars up for a living lol
mine tickes when the ac is on but only when the ac is on
