2002 Lincoln LS V8 3.9 Cat Converter replacement

Hey All!

I have a 2002 Lincoln LS, v8 3.9 and my check engine's been on for a while for the LH side catalytic converter. I'm wanting to change both sides, just because I don't want to change one and have another one go out shortly after.

I took it to the shop and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for labor + part. Friend of mine is a mechanic and he said he'd help me replace these if I get the parts. Honestly, I just want to go with the cheapest option that can last for about 2 more years, since I'll most likely be getting a different car anyways.

Has anybody replaced these cat converters and how complicated is to do it?

I'm considering going with Eastern Catalytic Converters, so what do you guys think?

yup I just did mine about 2 months ago, I used magnaflow 91065's they were 200 bucks with shipping and they have both o2 bungs in them. They are not a 100% direct fit and may need a little modifying.

Installing convertors on Gen I V8

Get the direct fit type either dealer or Walker. Both are very expensive.

The universal type Walker makes and other brands make can be welded in but watch out it takes a ton of fitting before completing the weld and the bends are now incorrect causing an increase in back pressure. Remember Max flow is determined by the minimum cross section of a bend. The convertor also comes extremely close to the firewall/front floor area and may bang and thump. The stock ones fit much better.

I have done both direct fit and universal weld in installations, and I will never do the universal type again.

Before you install a Cat. find out what caused it to fail. They fail when they overheat. They overheat during a lean run condition or excessive oxygen entering the exhaust stream usually from misfires. Check for any leaks in the intake tubing after the MAF sensor. Check for cracked plastic vacuum lines. Make sure the MAF sensor is not dirty or contaminated. An oversoaked K&N air filter will do just that. Check you long term fuel trims on the scanner, if too far out check the above mentioned items or you will be buying more than one convertor.

Go to walker online exhaust catalogue...

I'm in the same situation, both my cats are cracking and rattling, but I don't have the money to replace them until I get paid, how long can I drive with them until I get paid. this my only car and don't have any other rides to get me work.
 
They will adversely affect your mileage and if they get totally clogged they can cause greater backpressure which hopefully (by design) will cause the engine to stall before it actually explodes.. Mine need replacing but arent that bad and I'm still getting an average of 17-20mpg depending on how I drive and how much traffic I end up sitting in. Where at in Austin, atxsaint?
 
okay ill keep that in mind, I live in east central, really close to downtown.
 
my car gets about 18-22mpg also dipping on traffic so i don't think my cats are to bad just still wanna replace them, muffler shop told me it would cost 1, 150 that's including parts+laboriI was like wow, so I'm looking around finding a better price.
 
Direct fit parts seem to be about $500 shipped, labor should be less intensive if you get the direct fits (~2 hours labor, no parts). Universals will save you ~200 on parts but they'll get you on more time and materials in labor.
 
what website do you suggest to order them from. lately I've been hearing these lincoln ls are a handful but others say it's a great car. what's you opinion stumpie
 
Both of the above are true. My wife hates my LS because of the work it requires. I like the wrenching but it does keep my wallet fairly light.

I just bought this car for 5200 cash with only 110xxx and so far I've only had to put a thermostat in and now the cats.

so I paid $5200 for my car and it only had 110xxx miles was that good price everything is in great condition
 
Just ordered two Walker direct-fits from RockAuto for $430 for both for my '00. They actually dropped in price like $60 as I've been keeping an eye on them for 6 months.

Also, I used a 5% coupon that's floating around the web for RockAuto, pretty good deal but expiring soon.

**need a little advice so I'm looking for catalytic converters for my Lincoln 3.9l and it's a 02,i found these on*ebay*but it says it's for the 3.0L. but it will work for my car, just wondering would it matter here's the link they gave me*http://www.carpartswholesale.com/v5/...Listing+Page:1
 
so would it matter if the catalytic converter says it fits a 2002 Lincoln ls 3.0L. b/c I have a 3.9L
