I have a 2004 LS with the 3.0 6 in it with 190,000 km's on it and I have gotten the dreaded E on the dash. My symptoms are that it pops the transmission shift solenoid fuse in the fuse box under the hood and then will not shift gears, it will drive but seems to stay in 3rd or 4th gear. When I replace the fuse it will at times pop immediately and other times I can drive it completely normally for a few days and then it pops again.

I had the electrical tested and was told the only thing left on that circuit that could cause the problem was the shift solenoid. So I just had the solenoid pack in the tranny changed but to no avail. The replacement pack was tested and confirmed before replacing it.

Has anyone seen or found how to fix this?

Thanks for the help!

This would be fuse F1.06 under the hood (15A). You need to have the "electrical" checked by someone who knows what they are doing. The only possibilities to blow the fuse are the solenoid assembly (unlikely), the evap purge and vent valves, the brake pressure switch, the EGR module, the manifold runner control solenoids, and the wiring to these things.. You've changed the solenoid assembly, so it's not that. It's probably a chafed wire that shorts to ground (bare metal of the car) as it moves around.

Thanks, that is what I felt was the issue as well. Now that I know the colour of the wire I will follow it myself.

See a little more info added above. The other wire colors are green/red (evap vent), green/yellow (brake pressure), green/black (EGR), green/blue (evap purge), green/orange (IMRC solenoid 1), and green/black (IMRC solenoid 2). Still, the most likely one is the one to the transmission solenoids, as that one is the most in harms way.

Ford found my broken wire for 70 bucks. The fix cost another 175. don-ohio

I had the same symptoms on mine, also '04 3.0L. It was one of the two Intake Runner Solenoids (IMRC). The previous post is correct in listing the 6 circuits that are all on the same fuse. If it is one of them they run about +/- $425.00 each. At least buying them from Ford you get 2yr warranty on the parts & labor. I had one of the replacements fail 10mo later & they covered the replacement 100%.
