just a little info was reading in the march edition of motor trend. They are say the 2008 ls will be sitting on the d3 platform the same platform the ford 500 is on. Other changes will be a 4.4 liter 311 hp motor, though they say by 2009 the ls might just be powered by a 5.0 liter engine. Cant wait to see those changes

I can wait. Yeah more hp is nice but who needs or wants a FWD platform even if it is set up for AWD.

While Cadillac has figured it out, Lincoln is going backwards. They had one of the best platforms around in 1999 in the LS and they haven't done anything to keep it up to date. Now they plan on throwing it away and going from a RWD dominant platform to a FWD dominant platform. Sad.

I agree....

Well, maybe there is a way to take those bigger engines and just swap them and maintain the rwd. That would cost a few $$$.

WHO WANTS A 350HP FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR??? wtf?
Or it might be better two question who here wants a front wheel drive car period. If you think a front wheel drive car can be a great car, you are on the wrong forum. Even Acura has gone to AWD to try and win back performance people.

Fwd != Performance car (sorry '!=' is not equal to in computer languages)

You forgot to DIM FWD. :N

Haha. Yeah since FWD is a built in function... Everyone one else is getting compile error becasue they thought this was an automotive forum :) Yeah folks computer geeks don't just geek out on Star Wars and Computers :)

The problem for us is, Ford would sell more LS's if they were front wheel drive. At least with the current buyer perception that FWD is better.

However, Ford might be better off keeping the LS RWD, seeing as alot of the other manufacturers are starting to build RWD cars again.

Doesn't matter to me though, I really like my LS but there are PLENTY of other RWD V8 cars available that will suit me just fine when it comes time for replacing it.

Marauder or Lincoln TownCar, many mods available to un-geezerize it

Mercedes C series, specifically the 4 door 'Kompressor'

Chrysler 300C/Magnum/Charger/SRT versions

BMW 5 series

Cadillac CTS-V (if I can find a good used one)

Those are just 5 of my other favorite RWD V8 sedans.

out of all those cars you said none of them is touching the ls so keep looking for a car to replace the unreplaceble with

If LS goes FWD mine gets replaced (sometime in 2010) with one of the following (RWD versions not AWD) 300C , STS, CTS-V or GTO (hopefully the next version has a bigger trunk). As with the LS exact choice will depend on which one suffers the most in resale value so my used one will be affordable.

Without trying to start a big arguement, I'd like to know what "none of them touching the LS" means.

Are you talking straight out performance? The 300C, CTS-V, Marauder and 5 series are all faster.

The MB and TownCar are more luxurious. Also my idea of owning a TownCar would be to throw some 5 star Marauder wheels on it, and add a supercharger to the 4.6L - and that would make it faster than a stock LS.

Handling? You might have me there, the LS is very nimble, and only the 5 series is close. And although handling is important to me, these other sedans would be adequate for my needs.

So even though I really do like my LS, I don't pretend it's the hottest thing out there.

I disagree with the first part of you post.
mostly because of the second part of post.
Good percentage of the driving public has figured out that FWD = POS when it comes to larger luxury sedans. Just look at GM, most of the marquis are disappearing except the base line (chevy) and the top of the line (caddy). Caddy has embraced rwd again so they are selling.

even the Jap brands are scambling to come up with larger RWD or AWD platforms to sell to the public.

The LS weakness is Ford only half commited to trying to put the LS solidly in the performance sedan pack. They did not offer a sporty enough package with a manual trans behind the v8 and so they did not steal bmw/audi/lexus/etc. sales. They also did not have a clue as how to market the car (It was almost as bad as the "this is not you father's Oldsmobile" advertizing campaign).

The dealers did not know what they had, and I blame ford marketing for that. When new car comes out the sales people are supposed to be informed as to where in the market it is targeted and how to attact those buyers (and how to counter the competitions features). I saw lincoln dealers in 2002 that did not even know which cars the LS was supposed to becompared to. (one salesman kept comparing it to a Park avenue, I told him to get his salemanager.)

In what way? The new SRT8 smokes the LS in terms of acceleration, braking, and skid pad. And it starts at 41K. Think about this: Very close to Mercedes E55 levels of performance for half the price. Now if it only came with a Stick...

BINGO. Lincoln Mercury dealers have never had a clue on how to sell sportier non-old man cars and Ford marketing doesn't help. The LS has a bad name (should have called it a Continental even with the bad connotations with the younger crowd).

Ford marketing did not learn from their errors with the Merkur line. A decent, not great line of cars killed by a bad name, dealers who equate bigger is better and a marketing department with a fear of competing with their own Mustang.

an LS with a manual V8... that would be a dream come true for me. I hope the Ford guys are reading this forum.

NO FWD in 2008, instead offer a manual V8 with 350 HP :steering

:L

Even if the ford boys are reading this thread they won't do it. That would make too much sense to make/build a car that consumers would buy.

Its like GM, instead of going ahead and continuing the Cavalier (J-body plateform) and just putting in the new ecotec SC motors and such they decide to scrap it and bring out this thing called the cobalt. Now, its not a bad little car, but ensuthiasists(sp sorry) like myself for the J-body hate it and think instead of being done w/ the platform. Alteast have kept the name cavalier, it sounds better. What ever happened to just upgrading? And the only nice looking cobalt is the SS and that is overpriced for what it is.

I did not like the LS after '02 too much anyway, always prefered the look of the '02s and decided that was the year I was going to get. But going fwd is a stupid thing to do even if there is an awd option or whatever, awd sucks in my opinion because of the power loss.

This is my opinion: Anything under 220 HP is ok for fwd, anything over 220 should go to the back wheels and only cars that put down 300hp to the wheels can be awd.

You have obviously never driven any of those cars. There are a few on that list I'd take in a heartbeat over my LS.
