Hey guys I have a 06 expedition and on start up it blows a big puff of blue smoke, then burns clean. its a 4.6 any ideas what and whats the fix

you have leaking valve guide seals. I wouldn't worry about it until it smokes all of the time

Don't worry about it, it is just leaking valve guide seals like brentalan said. Seafoam isnt going to fix it, and more than likely, any leak stopping additive won't either.

You are pretty much going to have to live with it.

Depending on your mileage and if you are still covered under warranty, you may consider taking it back to a dealer and telling them to fix it.

Thanks, One time I had to add 2 quarts and put a oil additive into it, and it seemed to help for awile. just kind of embaressing some times

Lucas Oil treatment is about the best I have ever used. It won't stop it completely, but it will reduce the smoking considerably

blue or black smoke is just oil or running rich like everyone else has said.... white smoke is a tell tale sign you are running very lean though, if it's white smoke I would get your car checked out pronto

Its the valve guides like they said. No big deal. When you shut the engine off you have a little oil leaking past a valve or 2. Just change your oil every 3k and all should be fine. My F-150 did when I was over seas for 2 years and came home, it only had 18k on it. Never resulted in any issues. Sold it at 175k, no motor issues at all.

4.6's had some type of felt bushing in the valve guides that would dry up if not ran in a long period of time.

Heres a clip of my truck i did for the exhaust on it, first time I started it in 2 weeks. You can see the puff of smoke from my leaky vave guide. Has 150k on it at the time of the vid. Mine was the #7 cylinder that had the leaky guide, you should be able to tell from looking at the plugs.
