My shifter is really sloppy and loose feeling on my car. I have not had the boot off to look at it yet. Are these a direct shifter mounted on the transmission or a linkage type? Do they make a short throw or a way to rebuild it? Also the previous owner had a new clutch an slave put in about a month ago. The clutch engages near the top of the pedal travel, Is this normal or is there a way to bleed to slave?
 
The shifter has a linkage to the transmission. There really is not much to rebuild on the shifter. most of the parts are nylon that are wear items and they don't get very sloppy. There is no short throw kit out there and I have not found any alternative shifters that will fit and give a short throw. I have pulled shifters out of other cars in the junkyard to see if they would fit and get a shorter shift, but nothing has fit yet. One of the issues that I see with other shifters is that the LS shifter linkage is mounted in a rubber insulator inside the shift lever. This isolates vibration and no other shifters I thought might work had this feature. So there may be increased vibration if an alternative would found. I once found a 5 speed in a junk yard and I pulled the shifter to see if I could modify it, but there really is not much material to weld onto below the pivot point to make this possible. At least I don't have the skill to do it. l did the math at one time and figured that I needed to add an inch to the length of the shifter below the pivot point to reduce the throw by 40%. I figured that would be a good reduction and I would "miss" the 5 gear shift less often. If you find something that will fit, please post it here.

If you do pull the shifter out of the car, I have some advice for putting it back in. The shifter can be installed backwards, and if it is the clips that hold the shift boot to the console will break when shifting into reverse. There is a slight bend in the shifter of only a few degrees. When installing the shifter, make certain that the bend goes to the right. If you install it with the bend to the left, it will break the clips if they are not already broken.

You have to be able to bleed the slave. Despite 13 years of owning a LS 5 speed I have not had to change out or work on the clutch. I don't know how much bleeding would actually change the engagement point. Don't know if there is an adjustment either. Maybe some others will know.

A clutch slave cylinder that needed bleeding would release down at the floor, not at the top of the pedal. This could be more of a problem with clutch disk thickness remaining. If that is not new, the clutch disk could be too thin.
