5w-20 vs. 5w-30?

No. According to a bunch of oil sh!t I've read, it was an emissions limitation/ agreement/ whatever thing. There are no benefits or drawbacks that I've read about...

I guess what happened was the Feds mandated some kind of fuel/ smog efficiency by 2003 or so. Instead of spending a lot of money to engineer new equipment, Ford made some changes to recommended oils in order to meet that requirement. I forget where I read it, but it goes something like that.

Show me the article or as far as I am concerned its urban myth. But if your in a warm climate, no need to change really. If your using synthetic, no need to change really. If you want to use what Ford recommends, reduce startup oil pressures and better lubricate the engine, go with 20.

I use 5w-20 Castrol synthetic. No complaints. Seems to be a bit quieter on startup though, especially in the cold. Probably due to lighter weight.

I run 10w30 Mobil 1 in my car.... but I live spitting distance from the Gulf of Mexico. Anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line you should definitely be running 5w oil unless it is summer time. The second number in 10w30 or 5w20 is the weight of the oil at operating temperature, not startup.

We only have two seasons down here.... Summer and Fall. :D

Anyone use the Amsoil XL 5w-20? I'm thinking about switching from Mobil 1...

You have personally sent out UOA's or have seen others have good UOA's? German Castrol is too thick for my taste for a modular Ford engine.

i use 10W40.........yes 10W40 mobil 1, wal mart got it, so went synthetic.........i live in the desert........no problems EVER in any of our cars 10w40 in all of them.........5w20 = water out here in the summer, poor little hondas........ ;)

10W40!!! Wow, but your right. In extreme heat 40 is ok, but it gets pretty darn cool at night, right? That would be my only concern - cool night starts.

I use 0w-30 in my other Lincoln as an experiment during the winter. They have all come back good so far, so I might just change over to it completely. Doesn't seem to thick to me.

well yeah it gets cold, when we had that "cold snap" like a month ago, it got to the low 20's, now of course to some of you that probably aint cold.......lol...... lowest the car read was 23 degrees on my way to work one day, hottest - 123 :D ............our winter is normally around the 50's though so i dont think 10W40 is that bad were i live for the cold, starts right up......... :)
