Have been reading and reading...haven't found anyone else with this question.

Apparently, I've hyperextended my trunk pulldown. The motor wants to work, so I disconnected it. Can this be fixed, or does the entire assembly need to be replaced?

Also, a local wrecking yard person told me I needed to buy the entire tail light component, I can't just replace the lens. Is that true?

Thanks, ya'll. ('Specially 94m5)

I had to replace the pull down motor on my Town Car and the part that is on the trunk lid itself, after i did that everything was cool after that!!!!

Does NO ONE have any information on this? I would like to help, but I have never even sat inside a VII, let alone worked on one.

Cmon guys, lets help her out.

It really depends on what's wrong with the thing. There is a worm gear inside the motor if I remember right that controls vertical movement. This could be stripped, but you will have to take apart the motor to see if you cannot see it through the clear plastic housing. There are also two limit switches that control motor operation. One (black) is by the motor latch and controls lift. The other is small, white, and is on the trunk latch. It swings up as the motor latch contacts it. This one controls descent. The electrical connection may be dirty or loose causing a failure to descend. You could try spraying some contact cleaner or WD40 and wiggling it to see if it cures it.

The tail light lens is epoxied to the housing. Lens removal is usually difficult and, more often than not, destructive. Replacing the entire component is recommended. The same goes for any of the other light assemblies on the car.

Thanks for your time, ND4SPDLSC,

once again!

Regarding the trunk pulldown, the motor tries and tries to work, the u-shaped piece that should be pulled down doesn't move. As I said, I disconnected the motor...

Thanks for your comments on the tail light lens also. If the wrecking guy calls back with a part, I'll take him up on it...if I haven't already found one 'round here.

Take care,

:)

Mybad, ND4SPDLSC...

I just re-read your post, and it makes more sense. Sorry for the previous post, showing off my ignorance...

When it gets to the shop on Wednesday, I'll have my guy explore it.

Hope your Monday goes well,

:)

I could have been more clear, but it does sound like the gears are stripped. I'm not sure if Ford sells replacement gear sets, but you can install one from any '84-'87 Continental and probably any '80s Town Car. I know for the Continentals it will be a directswap into a Mark. I am 99% sure for the Town Car. Good luck!

Hmmm.. Well, replacing a lens is not that tricky if you're gentle and know where and how to apply pressure. I've done so many, it's ez for me, but they can break if you don't know what to do. Send me a note if your really want to know the procedure.
They're sealed with what's called butyl tape (spelling?) or windshield ribbon. 3m makes it. It's a black bead of really sticky stuff... don't get it in your hair, lol. You can buy it in a caulk-gun form too. Yuck!

But I would think it's harder to find a single lens than an entire housing at the wrecking yard(they're pretty cheap as a whole unit), so don't bother with lens removal unless you really have to.

DONT GO THROUGH ANY OF THE TROUBLE OF FIXING THE BROKEN ONE, EITHER PICK ONE UP FROM A JUNKYARD OR EBAY FOR LIKE TEN BUCKS AND HAVE A FRIEND INSTALL IT. MINE DID THE SAME THING AND I FOUND ONE AT THE JUNK YARD FOR 15.00 (DIDNT FEEL LIKE WAINTING FOR SHIPPING WHEN BUYING FROM EBAY) AND REPLACED MINE IN 5 MIN. I READ THAT YOU ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED SO IF I WERE YOU I WOULD ASK ANYONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO USE A SCREWDRIVER TO PUT IT ON CAUSE ITS THAT EASY

Thanks, everyone!

The guy at the wrecking yard can get me a tail light "tomorrow" for $75. That sounded a bit high, so am shopping...

As for the trunk pulldown/latch thingie, I'll give all your suggestions to my shop tomorrow, when I take 'er in for the suspension changeout (UPS just brought my Strutmaster parts!!!) Would really like to find a tail light while she's in the shop, so may just go find that wrecking yard...

Will keep you posted how this all turns out, and thanks again for all your help!

P.S. It's not that I'm not mechanically inclined, it's my brother's fault. He didn't let me help when I was little, so I don't know how! ;-)

It's probably easiest to buy both parts off eBay for maybe $10-$20 each with shipping. Both are easy to install and I'd say a novice could do it easily, especially the trunk motor. We canw alk you through it all.

wow......thats gratuitous use of the caps lock button.......:shifty:

Mose.

I like your handle.

As stated, the tail light lense and the pull down motor can be changed out by anyone that can turn a screwdriver or screwdriver-like nutdriver.

You mentioned "suspension changeout". I hope you decided to keep your air ride suspension system and just replace the bags with ... new bags. If you're switching to springs, we'll still love you like a Sister, but you'll be sitting on the opposite side of the field with the AWAY TEAM. Half of us like the bags; the other like the springs.

Mike

sorry i forgot to take off the caps lock button, i dont really pay attention to those kindof things when i'm reading or writting in these forums. i do understand that that is ofensive to some people though. i always thought what was stated in text of the message not the fact that its in caps lock was what made something offesive.

i.e. I LOVE BABIES

as far as the comma and period stuff, i'm a car guy not at school teacher. as long as i get my point accross it dont really matter to me
