Ive been reading the brake posts on the abs .... alot of great information.... been looking all over the web

I tried the key on press the brake pedal test and i hear the hydraulic pump run every time ..... from what ive read here that means i have a bad accumulator ?

1) is there much to changing it out......

2) i have one from a junk car that looked pretty good i was going to try first......if its bad also ....is there a good place to get a new one for reasonable money ..... ha ha ?

3) I guess ill need an o-ring also and was wondering where to get one

Then im gonna bleed the whole system......

I called helms and the manual for the powertrain is out of stock and they said if enough people called or went to their site asking for it they would print some more of them

the link to it is

if interested

Thanks for any help

It could mean a few different things.

No.

That's a tough question. There are two types of accumulators. IIRC, there is a short threaded one and a long threaded one. Neither was year specific nor would work in place of the different length threaded unit. To make things more complicated, you won't know that it's working until you do a complete bleed of like half a gallon of fluid.

The o-ring is very important but I cannot remember the size or number.

brake problem

Thanks for the reply Old School

I guess maybe I should try bleeding them first then

I had an ex dealer tech test the codes and said it was possibly the accumulator or the solenoid valves might be sticking but i dont remember what the codes were....i have a code reader somewhere and will test them also and post them

this is a link i found for hydraulic accumulators ,,,,i havnt called them yet....thought you might find it interesting

might be a source for accumulators

thanks

I had the same problem. I ended changing out the accumulator with a new one from the dealer. I was told that the 88-92 Mark VII's used the long nipple accumulator. This was really good for me since the car is an 89 and they don't stock the short nipple version any more.

I was really hesitant to buy a new one because the part is about $200.

If your abs pump runs every time you hit the pedal and the rest of the system works this is your problem. If you start the car and don't touch the brakes, then start driving and the light turns on the instant you hit the brakes then this it your problem. If the light turns on the instant the car starts rolling then you might want to check the wheel speed sensors.

I went through all the abs actuator trouble shooting steps and that all check out so I bought the accumulator. When I put it in the problem was solved. :)

It was a simple install. Hit it with an impact hex wrench and it comes right out.
