How do i know if i have a blown head gasket on my 1991 Lincoln Towncar. The car showed signs of overheating, it appeared to have too much oil in it according to the dip stick. When I pulled the oil plug water came from drain, the oil that came out was thick muddy looking the oil filter was clogged. I put water in reservoir it ran straight out oil plug drain.

It could be your oil filter adapter gasket went bad. Don't condemn the engine yet.

How would I check the oil filter adapter gasket? I figured it was fairly large block crack or blown head gasket. The FULL story is one day the towncar w/ 83,191 miles on it, being driven by wife "overheated" ( idiot light on )...she stopped & put 3 q of oil in it on way home. We went oot for 4 days ( different car ) & it sat. When we returned I checked oil & it was a bit over an inch overfilled, past full on dip stick & clear. The next day w/o her or I thinking aabout the oil overfill, she drove it about 5 miles & it started running rough & hot ( idiot ) light came on again. She stopped let it cool down...then had a running rough/ knocking drive of about 4 miles ...& the car cut off several times. she went to a shopping center for about 2 hours....then checked the radiator resivoir & it was empty ( no radiator cap )...she put in water...& again had a rough ride home ( about 6 miles ). It sat overnight & next day I checked the oil...still about an inch ( maybe a tad more ) above fill line, golden yet very thin ( unsure of wgt. of oil put in ). Her son ( a gearhead, unlike me ) came to check it, planned on replacing temp guage & ended up draining the oil...wh/ was initially like a tan thick paste...that had gummed up the filter & clearly had water in it. I wasn't home...but he told me... w/ the oil pan off...when he put water in the radiator resivoir.....fairly quickly water came out the oil pan. I've never heard of such a quick output after adding water via the oilpan ...(?) Anyway, the new temp guage was not put in ( old one "looked" Ok..unstuck )...NO oil put in & old oil filter put back on. There she sits & i really don't know what to do...
This was my Dads car who passed in 09'...the car sat w/ me starting driving it a mile or so every 1-3 months for near 4 years. When the wife got it....oil was changed...antifreeze checked ( no radiator flush done )...air put in tires & she started driving it. Starter soon went out ( the 3rd replacement in 72k miles )....new stereo put in....auto door locks re-hooked up ,windows tinted & later 2 new tires put on. The car was very well maintained by my Dad, rode great ( air suspension ) & hauled butt......up til now. She is a 91' Towncar Executive Series V8 Overhead Cam ( ? liters )...with otherwise everything working but passenger window...wh/ my mom burnt out ( I guess ) w/ her Alzheimers...opening & closing it constantly. ANY & All advice would be great. I really don't have the funds to have her towed & checked @ dealership....where they'll charge me more than it's worth ( ? value ) to diagnose the dang thing ! The oil filter adaptor being bad or blown by the extra oil makes sense to me & could likely be the best I could hope for.
My stepson...thinks its a head gasket at best or likely cracked block. Wife checked w one auto-salvage place & they'll give her/us $200 to pick it up. I think that's pure BS...as just in parts, tires, stereo it's worth a helluva more than that. Location is Jacksonville, Fl. where the Jaguar's suck & Tebow should coach High school... Thankx.........for any input. I gotta make some pretty quick decisions on it....as wife using my car now...while I recoup from back surgery.

Thank you...yes I ran on way too much. The issue is putting water in the radiator resivoir & it coming out the oil drain plug..What is most likely cause & how to approach the problem of water in the oil ?. i've been told its either a head gasket or cracked block. Two "shadetree" mechanic's I've asked knew nothing about a "oil filter adapator gasket"..... Anyway, since the antifreeze/water and the oil are separate closed loops....even if it was a oil adaptor gasket, how could a bad one would have anything to do w/ oil & the antifreeze/radiator water mixing?

Both coolant and oil flow through the gasket
They fail on most sohc 4.6l motors at some point
If ignored could cause motor failure.
