Hi, im pondering trading my 1992 Sedan deVille on a 1994 Town Car Executive Series and heres why:
-I dont really like FWD, especially in a big car,
-im a little hesistant to trust the 4.9 due to mine leaked coolant from the block,
-and it has a main bearing knock.
-No body makes aftermarket parts for the 4.9,
-the 4.9 is hard to work on and parts are expensive.
-and the 4.9 needs premium.

The things i like about the Town Car are:
- RWD
- Body on Frame
- Smoothest ride i've ever experienced and vague steering (almost too smooth and the steering is almost too vague )
- 4.6 is more reliable than the 4.9
- 4.6 is mounted longitudinally so its easier to work on
- more performance parts for 4.6
- 4.6 is cheaper to get parts for
- digital dash in town car (risk?)
- the town cars hood seems GIGANTIC when viewed from driver's seat
- town car's interior seems more luxurious
- dual airbags in T/C

Things i dont like about T/C
- no cupholders in Executive series, you had to order the signiature series to get any cupholders until 1995 when they redesigned the dash
- no heated seats
- the car doesnt handle worth a damn (the deville handles like 5x better)
- slow (any 4.9 is faster than 4.6 T/C)
- the T/C was not available with a Limited Slip Differential, and traction control was optional. ( I live in minnesota)
- i could not drive the T/C aggressively (but then again that may be good)
- the rear air springs may leak, replacement air springs are $1200 but coil overs are about $200 ( i think they're coilovers)
- Ford's trannys dont even compare to GM's they're not reliable at all and shift hard
- the cadillac is the better looking car
- digital dashes are a risk

tell me what you think, gimme suggestions, advice!!

well actually there are somethings im gonna change in my "against town cars section"
- the executive series does have cupholders in the dash, but no storage armrests
- the T/C's handling isnt that bad
- the 4.6 is almost as quick (it lacks in midrange, but is torque rich in bottom!)
- i've seen replacement air springs for $79 a piece on the internet
- not as much rear seat room as in the deville (legroom is less, and the seat bottoms are higher off the floor)
- tranny bulge really makes the middle rear seat useless

i have to disagree on some of those... the 90-2005 towncars are some of the most attractive cars on the road.. the 90s devilles are uglier than sin.. especially the pre 97..

that 4.6 in the tc will haul some ass..
the trannys are fine, my last tc was a 90 with 143k on it and my tranny shifted like new.. and i dogged the hell out of that car.
heated seats are kinda stupid, that wouldnt keep me from buying a better car.
the airsprings go out.. but its a hell of a lot cheaper to get those replaced int he town car than if you have suspension problems in your deville.. www.arnottindustries.com is where i got the replacements for my 90.
the cup holder thing.. my 90 was a signature and didnt have cup holders.. i dealt with it.. i drive a 99 with cupholders now.. and would rather have the 90...
tc handles bad ass.. especially my 99. handles better than alot of cars on the road.
the digital dash is amazing, i wish they would bring it back.

if the tc is in better condition, i would go for it.

as for the new tc.. the 4.6 in the towncar has a higher displacement than the northstar.. and higher torque in relation to horsepower..

i agree i have a few friends with 93 and 94 towncars those are nice and run great

I currently own a 1991 Town Car Executive with about 82,000 miles on it. I would recommend it over the Cadillac Deville because of the gas mileage (Town Car 18c25h, Deville 16c24h) and because I have driven many a Cadillac (My Aunt buys a new one every year) and they don't seem to stay in tune to keep getting the claimed gas mileage.

The Deville has FWD which is good for where you live, but the Town Car can handle winter just as well when you put 300-400lbs of sand in the trunk(In Bags in a Rubbermaid container). I live in Michigan and because I bought the car brand new BFGoodrich 80,000mi touring tires, it handled well and didn't have traction trouble in the winter.

The Town Car has cheaper parts. Being built on a platform from the 1970's and sharing many drivetrain components with the cheaper Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis it is fairly cheap on parts. It does not however have the high output of the Northstar.

The 4.6L Engine has been known for it's reliability and longevity. Many companies use CV, GM & TC's for shuttle and taxi vehicles because of the low maintenance costs and that they can run the for 200-300k miles before having to put another engine in, or perform a rebuild.

The TC has a very nice ride, but it comes at the sacrifice of sportiness. I found that going through all of the suspension and replacing the worn bushing and shocks is a way to dramatically improve handling (I used all Motorcraft shocks and bushings, all OEM).

Ford Transmissions generally are crap, I'm not going to lie to you. The AOD 4sp. Automatic, however, is a well built transmission that can last up to 200k miles if treated well and maintained. I would say that the Deville and Town Car are level on this playing field. The Deville however has a quicker sportier transmission which will last just as long. The Town Car is more aimed at gas mileage in the Trans. dept.(It has slower shifts and is eager to put you into overdrive).

I have no experience with the Town Car digital dash, as I have the bulletproof analog display(it's hard to screw one of them up in any car), so I will not voice an opinion on that.

The Deville has it's positives, but the car overall doesn't have the advantages the TC has.

The Deville has a higher performance engine, the Northstar has been selling Cadillac performance for several years, but is very expensive repair wise and has a pension for oil seal failure.

The Deville hands down has better acceleration and a sportier suspension. Both come at a cost, poorer gas mileage and harsher ride.

The Deville has FWD which is nice for up north. FWD means that up front is more cramped when you need to work in there.

The Deville having the knock means expensive repairs down the road and if you don't do them yourself, you are going to be bled through the nose.(Regardless Lincoln or Cadillac, both dealerships are expensive, parts are another matter)

SUMMARY
The Cadillac is more sporty and has more power and is suited to your climate, The Town Car is slower but has a legendary ride and is more roomy. If you want a luxo-sports car get the Cadillac, if you want a true luxury car that's cheap to keep on the road get the Lincoln. Good Luck and I hope your choice works out either way.

well thank you Triumph GT6, that info is exactly what i wanted! I know how quick the 4.6 Northstar is in comparison to the 4.6 SOHC, but i think the 4.6 SOHC and the 4.9 Pushrod V8 they used in the '91-95 Devilles are pretty similiar for power. the 4.9 is a motor laden with gobs of low end torque, but it kind of runs out top end, dont get me wrong, its really quite quick from 60-108, but its nothing compared to a N*. Now i've never floored a town car above 60mph, but at lower speeds, the 2 cars seem pretty close. But i did notice the 4.6 to be a smoother, quietier engine, and the thing just leaps off the line, which really surprised me.

Another thing i really like about the Town Cars is that when you are driving it, it seems like you are driving a aircraft carrier. I say this because u are sitting behind this hood that seems to go on for a mile, when in fact its not any longer than the hood on my deville, it just seems way long because its soooo straight, and the hood ornament is smaller than the one on the caddy. Another reason i say its like an aircraft carrier is because its uncomparably smooth. I've owned a Roadmaster, and the Deville. Neither is nearly as smooth. Like they say "nothing rides like a lincoln" The steering is a dream in this car, i dont care what magazines say about how great BMW's steering is and how all cars should copy BMW's ideas, i love the fingertip easy steering on the old school american rides. Nothing compares to it.

So all in all, i would have to say that the 90-97 Town car is a real throwback to the days of Kennedy, the Beatles and $.25 cents a gallon gas. Its unreal!

I dug around the internet and here's what I found that will surprise you:

1992 Deville - 200HP@4100RPM & 275ft-lbs.@3000
1994 Town Car - 210HP@4600RPM & 270ft-lbs.@3400RPM

So it appears that they are evenly matched, the Lincoln has 5% more horsepower, while the Deville has 2% more torque.

1992 Deville - 0-60: 8.8s - 9.5s (Dependins on source)
1994 Town Car - 9.1s - 9.9s (Depending on source)

The Lincoln is only slightly slower, but usually gets 5-8 miles per gallon more than the Deville when they both are as old as they are now.

The Deville is also a pushrod engine which is simply put, old. Pushrods work fine but the OHC and modular engine are major improvements performance-wise for modern cars.

I personally would get the Town Car, as my cousin Steve has a 1994 Cadillac Seville (Regular-model) that leaks oil into the cylinders, and it looks cool seeing it burn oil out all four chrome tailpipes.

That Town Car is a lot more modern car than that Deville. It gets more MPG while still having amazing performance. As I said earlier, good luck in making your choice. Either way stop into the TC forum and tell us what you got.

I yahoo!ed "1994 Town Car 0-60" and I also called up and asked Pfeiffer Lincoln Mercury, they quoted the 9.1s.

Both cars have very respectable 0-60 times for how large and heavy they both are. The Town Car being built on the 1970's Panther platform means that the 0-60 time of 9.1-9.9s is very impressive.

Good Luck

FWD sporty??

Just wanted to say that my 90' Towncar has been very reliable with 212,400 miles on the original tranny, engine, and airbags.

well FWD is not "sporty", but my cadillac with its 4 bad struts would outhandle my '95 Roadmaster limited with its new rear shocks any day of the week
