today my 95 mark Viii got to the top of the L in normal. I thought I would have to pull over. I turned on the heat and it cooled off immediately. no lights came on. does the t-stat need replacing? also the engine cooled off when the a/c was on. can someone suggest some help.

It's not the headgasket. Is the electric fan coming on? If it is, there might be air in the system or the thermostat is stuck shut. Good luck...

have you changed out the water pump, have you opened the cooling system at all....your best bet is to burp the system....just be careful you dont strip that cap otherwise your f'd in the a

So there is no smoke at all, the fan works when it is supposed to. the fan comes on when i turn the ac to max. I havent changed the water pump. I did take off the resivour cap and let the car get to temp. the odd thing that i see is that the amount of coolant that is in the tank stays at the cool level line. actually the amount would go above the line then a little beklow the line, but stay relatively around the cold line. does this mean that the t-stat isn't opening up?? also the color of the coolant is a cloudy green with a little dark tint to it.

also i need to pick up my mother-in-law at the airport tomorrow. do you think my car be ok to drive 25 miles round trip??

I think mine was doing the same thing a few weeks ago. I'd just be cruising, but a few minutes into the trip it would be hovering near the RED on the temp. I kept my eye on it, and once 'something' kicked in at that point it was back to normal for the rest of the 20 mile trek. I initially thought it was a bad/sticking thermostat opening up to late. So I went and bought a T-Stat and some coolant. Well once I got the car jacked up and got under I saw it was leaking coolant from the water pump. So I just went ahead and changed the water pump, T-stat, and coolant. All is good now. Sorry I can't tell you exactly what is wrong, but definitley look for leaking coolant on the center front of the engine. Atleast if it is the water pump it is probably the easiest thing to change on this car, and one of the cheapest also; under $50.

Good Luck...

not to hijack a thread, but this might help us both.

my car runs 1/4 gauge on the highway all day long.

when i get into stop and go type driving my temp climbs to 1/2 and 3/4 guage.

no air in system,my fan just wont turn on ealr enough,if i turn on my a/c the car cools down in just a few minutes,

being on the highway i am assuming allows the engine to cool properly because of road speed air coming into radiator,

my fan doesnt come on until upper 3/4 plus on the guage,i want it on before 1/2 guage,

my thinkng is i need to check the temp switch that feeds the fan signal.?

any other thoughts
