Hey guys, I have an extra set of 96-98 Cobra cams, and I was thinking of using the 4 intake cams on my Mark and wanted to know if that would work or not, knowing that the exhaust cams are identical to the Mark cams @ 184' lift vs 196' lift on the Cobra intake cams. All input is truly welcomed & appreciated.

Yes I have 4 individiual 96-98 Cobra heads = 8 cams. the larger cams sit on the intake side of the head they are the larger cam 196 lift. The cam on the exhaust side of head is smaller @ 184 lift(same as Marks) was thinking of using the 4 larger 196 lift cams on my Mark

The question for me would be, "what is this supposed to do in the end, when finished?"

If it's an improvement, would it really be worth all the work involved?

I seriously don't know so that's why I'm asking. It almost sounds like one of those mods that you can do and then be able to say "I have Cobra cams"

First, the numbers you quoted are duration, not lift.

Second, cam timing would be an issue.

Study a bit more.

Thanks for the correction on the duration, I just thought this slight mod would make a difference in horsepower

I thought the cams are already the same....is the cobra motor not the same internally??

No. '96-'98 Cobra motors have slightly better intake cams and an 8 bolt forged crankshaft, instead of a 6 bolt cast crankshaft.

And depending on who you talk to the Cobra version of the B heads are slightly different.

Someone should add "cobra cams vs. Mark viii cams" to the list of FAQs, cause I swear this topic comes up at least once a week..from what I gather (and it makes sense) the slight amount of increase in duration or lift is not going to be noticable by the seat of your pants and probably would show little change on the dyno, making it not worth the hassle of digging into the cylinder heads and all of the other work involved in changing cams.

Here are some graphs of the "Cobra Cam Swap"; worth about 20hp and about the same torque - worth it IMHO... I believe only one of them didn't degree in their cams...

Here is a couple of Mark VIIIs:

I would leave the cams alone, and port and polish the heads instead. The B heads respond well to porting and will give you more bang for your buck.

While you may be correct, it's way easier to swap cams then to port the heads. I'll be installing Cobra intake cams.

Luckily I had the 96-98 cobra heads port & polished recently, just waiting to install the motor sometime soon!!!

I'm pretty sure that the mark VIII has B or dual port heads, putting these cams on would be very little gain and you"ll probably have to degree them, that would mean adjustable cam gears. Now if you have C or single port heads, 99 to 02 Cobra, these are supposed to be worth 20 hp. I considered doing this on the CV but the amount of work involved is significant If you already have the cams to use as cores you'd be better off getting them reground to work with the intake, heads and exhaust you have or plan to have.

Like mentioned how many times is this beaten to death. The 96-98 Cobra cams are in Cobra "B" heads and are almost identical to our "B" heads. B head intake ports are to large to begin with hence the IMRCs. Exhaust ports could use some enlarging. If engine is out Cobra cams are a good little boost for the price. 20 hp gain on a 300hp engine is a good deal.

Im just thinking out loud here......... how are the cams worth 20 hp? People also claim 10+ for the Cobra intake. I ask because an LSC is rated at 285hp, no? And the 96-98 Cobra is rated at 305. So if you get 10 from the intake and another 20 from the cams then you are at 315hp on a car that has a tamer factory tune compared to its little brother.

Its magic and a type R sticker!

wow have we had this discussion a million times. elliot you have a shop and do that stuff all the time if you got one apart do it. without the cobra intake it wont breath the same, not much , but go ahead.its alot o work for 10-15hp make sure you degree them for proper gain. really you should buy comp cam grind, but you already got em you got workers who could do it pretty quick, do itman
