97 continental is vibrating

My car had been running fine until the other day.
It has started to vibrate/pulsate pretty badly and the
"service engine soon" light has come on, can you tell
me what the problem is and if its a big deal.

with a check engine light on, 1st thing you need to do is get the codes pulled. with that info, more can be determined.
