my father in law asked me to look at a 98 conti today with him, car is actually in pretty damn nice shape, inside and out, motor sounds great, everything works, heres the biggy though, 170k miles on it!
i took it for a ride today and all was great, 5 minutes in though i noticed on a deceleration i got back into it and it was like i never let off the gas, stuck it in nuetral and then back in gear, it banged back into gear rather hard. so it caught my attention, i continued driving for another few minutes and it did it again, i let off a little, the car coasted, then when i gave it gas again to keep driving it felt the same way, as if i put it in nuetral and back into drive without ever lifting my foot. i didnt like that so we went back and told the guy selling it and he said it has never done anything, he's gotta be 70 ish i know he isnt trying to b.s us, but i told him to drive it and of course it didnt do it with him driving. anyone know what the reason for it could be, he said he'll take it monday and see if his mechanic can scan the car and see if it shows anything wrong with the tranny. the price for the car is awesome but this tranny thing has me bugged, i dont feel like fixing it for my father in law if it quits on him after buying the car.

slipping tranny

If this is the original transmission I would be suprised that it has lasted this long. These trannys are only good for 100-120k. If the car is in great shape otherwise it may be a good deal.Great engines ,if maintained, good for 250-300k. Did you check the fluid ?Is it brown or red ? Is it full to the top of the crosslines on the dipstick? If you need to get the tranny rebuilt ,be prepared to spend about $1800 .Be sure when they rebuild it that they do the modifications.

fluid is brand new, right to par as far as full, smells brand new too. the owner doesnt know much history on it, his elderly neighbor owned it, someone tried to steal it and wrecked the ignition and scil module, lincoln told her 2 g's to fix it, so this current owner bought it and has his mechanic son fix it with a new scil and 2 new keys. but he doesnt drive it, they fixed the ignition, parked it in his driveway for sale where its been for about a month. he says it never slipped the times he drove it, then he says maybe its because its been parked for awhile, i said to him if a car cant be parked for a month and then driven without the trans slipping and smashing into gear like this, then something is wrong. i have drive cars parked for a year that went down the road perfect.

Tranny on the conti is a pain to fix so I've been told, took the trans shop 10 times to finally get it right but now it's throwing P1744 codes and they dunno why :shifty: Drives great for the first time in a year though! :p If it's acting like that I'd assume a sticky pump in the trans

Mine Dads Continental started to slip at 134K but changing the Fluid keeps it happy for about 25K. The car has 183K now with the orginal Transmission. If the car has been changed with new fluid and it still does it, Stay away.

In this market a small increase in purchase price can mean a big step up in the car you can buy. If I was going to end up with the 24/7 support I would "encourage" your fatherinlaw to buy the nicest, lowest mileage, etc. Continental you can find, not save $1k on the oldest, highest mileage, cheap for good reason car.

we didnt bother pursuing this car anyway, he's looking at a low mile 03 town car now so we'll see what happens.
