Car completely shuts off at random times with all electrical power gone and then randomly starts back up.Sometimes it takes several trys with key to get any power. Has 160000 miles and has been doing this for the last 25000 miles since i have owned. Have replaced battery twice and cleaned battery contacts. When running shows about 13.5 volts. My daughter usually drives but recently i have noticed headlights and taillights will not turn off when car is running. Alternator looks like original and wondering if it can cause a random no electric situation at times. Car is a 98 lsc. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could be a bad ignition switch or loose main harness connector.

I'm fighting a real similar problem on a 97 lsc. I've changed the scil module to no avail. I let you know what I find, when I figure mine out.

I'm gonna guess and say the alternator is on it's way out and also, check the pigtail for corrosion. Something may just be loose too....

13.5 volts could be just enough to slowly kill Batt.
Bad Batt is hard as hell on Alt.

Alt should push 14 volts.
You headlight problem could be as simple as the switch.
Nothing to do with your start-no start issues.

That wouldnt cause a complete power loss that randomly restores full power again. The car can run without the alt. Hes got a bad connection somewhere.......

hey, have you checked the power wires where they meet the main fuse box? Maybe its loose/durty/corroded?

Yes it could.....depends on how long the car sits.
He never states how long until he tried to re- start the car.

You can kill a batt. to nothing leave the car sit.. come back later and restart the car.
Have it charge up and limp around until you completely kill the batt.
Then replace the batt. and have it happen again.
As he as done twice.
That is exactly what my 93 did.

But WTF do I know.

You dont know chit! :p

JK, I made an assumption it was an instant kinda thing. Like wait a few seconds and then the car has power. Guess I should have requested more info.
