Owned since new, hit the $$$ wall a few years back around 135k miles, not the transmission, nothing major even, but pesky and money eating;

Rear air bags, solved with Arnott replacements, bags and orings, not drier or compressor which are still fine.
Front struts, replaced left twice, right once, plus some related steering bits.
Car died, won't restart, happened randomly. Replaced fuel pump assembly and few other $$$ items, turned out to be fuel pump control module fails when old and cold.
Rapid tire wear on inside front, two sets of tires, several alignments later, shop actually drilled and moved the passenger side camber plate, no issues since.
Couple of alternators failed, first maybe due to air bag leaks and compressor running down battery, second was bad rebuild.
Front end vibration, new tires, wheel balance did not fix, replaced front rotors, now fine. Suspicion is that front lug nuts over torqued and warped rotors during heat cycling.
Door ajar message, sprayed in door latch lots of WD40, repeat couple times a year, fine now.
AC compressor failed, replaced, fine now.
Idle issues, first time turned out to be PVC hose deteriorated and leaking, replaced twice now, seems fine.
High idle, no engine braking, car pull against brakes, replaced TPS twice, IAC three times, now fine seems like bad out of the box parts in the past.
Bearing failed on radiator fan motor, new parts taking too long to arrive, paid a crazy $150 for a junk yard part sourced locally, electrical connections vary in the model year and are not compatible, so finding right part took time.
Power steering rebuilt rack, issues from time to time with variable assist, maybe dying PS pump related, just replaced PS pump $$$ labor require discharge of AC.

That's about it, actually looking in SoCal for a nice low mileage second Conti, but so far a bit pricey for the 50k really clean ones, my target is about $5k for a very nice one.

I've got a radiator fan bearing going bad now. It isn't too bad but I notice it every time. Mine also destroyed the previous front tires on the insides only. New ones went on recently but I haven't had an alignment yet. I'll see how close to spec they can get before mentioning the drill.

I know I'd never sell my car for $5k even at 90k miles. Running cars are just worth more these days, even when they're as unknown as these cars are to the general motoring public. Nobody ever guesses my car is about to be 14 years old though!

Swapping just the motor is a good way to go, and decent prices can be found on replacement motors if you have some time to look and wait on shipping. Once the motor goes AC doesn't work very well and car gets hot with just one motor running, and of course once you pull the shroud the job needs to be done ASAP. Make sure your motor connectors match on the replacement. My driver side motor I think had no connector, just a pigtail going to the other motor, which didn't match my replacement motor, and all this found out at the shop with the car apart, so I could not wait for a better sourced part.

I'm thinking a couple places I had align the car "claimed" it was OK, then 4k miles later I notice the tires shot again, and nobody would stand behind the work they did or the tires they sold. Next bought tires and alignment at the same place, six months later and 3k miles, tires had heavy wear again, and they tell me alignment warranty is 90 days. First shop said alignment they did was correct and "tire" was bad.

OTOH this "could" have been some other suspension related issue I was having at the time, nothing like not seeing a left turn divider in the night and running over it at 40 mph. At least it wasn't a squared off curb type thing, just tall speed bump. I ended up replacing strut, spindle, wheel bearing, and ball joints on that side.

I know what you mean about liking the car and not selling cheap, but reality is that its a 14 year old car, and mine with 150k miles and three fender benders would sell for maybe $1500, and there is literally nothing wrong with it. Locally there is a 24k mile 2000 for $9k, and several 40k to 75k mile cars for $6k or under, and they are not at all likely to sell for close to asking prices. Old people have these cars, drive them very little, keep them in the garage, sometimes have good service done, and the kids who inherit the car just want to sell it. Its big car, fills a garage, and uses a fair amount of gas. Get a leak in air suspension and the dealer will quote thousands for repairs, same for a hand full of things a knowledgeable owner can get fixed for much less, but when grandma passes on, most have more important issues than getting top dollar for the car.

I was going to ask you what the best approach to the fan motor was. I'll start sourcing a new motor now before it becomes a real problem.

I'm also paranoid about the front tires so I'll get it aligned asap!

Most of the "grandma's" cars are in FL. Mine was one-owner, traded in at a Cadillac dealership, and never registered anywhere but GA so salt and rust are non-issues. That's the main reason I was willing to buy this one even if it didn't have a sunroof. It had everything else I wanted, and I admit the red helped sell it :D

my rear air leaks but its a simple fix and ill keep the rear on air.

I bought my car off my grandpa, he always ran a synthetic blend oil and fram oil filters. Only problems he had was a couple coils go bad, one at 85k and another at 90k. I had 2 go bad at around 164k, I replaced one of them with a Motorcraft coil and the 5 others that hadn't been replaced with Summit Racing coils. I had another coil go bad last week, one of the summit racing ones I just put in 4k miles ago went bad. Threw in 1 of the 3 extras I had and she's back up and running.
After drives longer than 25 miles or a good chunk of city driving my dash will say check transmission and will have a hard shift from gear 2 to 3. Pulled the code, P1744 torque converter solenoid somethingorother. Shop told me they'd basically have to rebuild the tranny if I wanted it fixed, or just run it as it is, keep up maintanence, and see how long she lasts. Other than that I have a very subtle brake squeak occasionally, everything else is perfect. Starts up like an absolute charm in the cold and holds her own in snow and crazy rain. Seriously, this is the best starting car I've EVER seen. Starts better than my mom's boyfriends 2014 Mazda 7 he drove off the lot 4 months ago. Mary has 168,500 miles behind her.

This almost sounds like my story. Mine is a 99 one owner car only seen life in FL. This car has an immaculate interior with a few scratches on the bumper, looks like golf bag drag marks. Found the car traded in at the toyota dealer. 110K on the clock, i ended up bringing it home for $1999 but I technically only paid $1399 for the car because I told them I wasnt adding their dealer fee to the car so tye dropped the price of the car by the dealer fee amount. It was pretty close, i shock the mans, told him i waw sorry we couldnt work out a deal, pushed my chair back stood up and turned around. It was at that moment he yelled. Whoa, whoa whoa, give me a couple of minutes. I stayed standing waiting. The rest is history... except, she doesnt have everything i wanted but i have made a few upgrades, the only think i am missing is plush ride and the 6 spoke rims- those are beautiful and i misss them
