While O-ring replacement might be relatively easy, there are lots of possible leak points or maybe the problem is not a leak at all.
(Google "air conditioning o-rings" and there's a video near the top of the page of hits.. a Ford Explorer o-ring replacement..)
My AC went warm before summer of '08. While I'm up for just about anything mechanical, I never even considered trying to diagnose and fix the AC myself..
It cost me $131 for 2lbs of freon (they saved and reused what was left in the system), $75 for labor, and $20 for ultraviolet dye. Total near $221. The ultraviolet dye indicates any leaks. I never went back to have them check for leaking dye..
You can tell if a coupling or connection is leaking because freon is an oil at normal temps and pressures, and attracts dirt. (I once found an empty 20 gallon freon drum and there was a residue of clear oil on the bottom..)
Anyway, if there's a bunch of black dirt accumulated near something like the o-rings or a hose connection, it might indicate a leak.
i'd recommend letting a shop do it.. they have all the equipment and practiced skills..
