this also works if you spilled it on your DATC unit. Buy some rubbing alcohol and tissue and tear down the gear shifter console. Remove the shifter knob (push down the black piece under the shifter knob, and remove two screws, mind there is a washer there.) Remove the knob by pulling up, and pull out the shifter bezel. No screws were in mine (gen 1) and it pulled right up. Start dousing the bezel with rubbing alcohol and rubbing out the sticky mess under there. I noticed most of my resistance was coming from the black sliding plastic flex piece. Move it up and down to get it nice and clean.

As a little side note, I had trouble pushing the shifter into SST mode and I noticed there is a round piece that rotates as you push the shifter to the SST and back into D5. That piece has to go in between the hard pieces and set flush against the plastic flex. Also, push the eye (hole) into the nipple that protrudes from the shifter trim. I'm now able to run through all gears smoothly without any resistance what-so-ever. It feels a ton lot better now, kinda feels like a brand new shifter.

Now for the buttons on the DATC module, you can just put some alcohol in a spray bottle and spray it into the buttons. Start pressing them until you feel no resistance/stickiness. Dry out with tissue. Keep repeating until your buttons feel comfortable to work with.

This is a personal experience that I had when a passenger spilled soda onto my DATC module and my gear shifter. Ever since the winter kicked in, my buttons got extremely hard to press and getting into SST was almost impossible without extreme force.

Once again, it's a personal experience. If you try this, I assume no liability or responsibility. It's a simple, straight forward solution.

I might be able to put up pictures tomorrow depending if the snow stops here in NY.
