Uh, yeah. They're just references. Not secret, and not codes. Sheesh.

U.S. Military Weapons Inscribed With Secret 'Jesus' Bible Codes
Pentagon Supplier for Rifle Sights Says It Has 'Always' Added New Testament References
By JOSEPH RHEE, TAHMAN BRADLEY and BRIAN ROSS

Jan. 18, 2010 —

Coded references to New Testament Bible passages about Jesus Christ are inscribed on high-powered rifle sights provided to the United States military by a Michigan company, an ABC News investigation has found.

The sights are used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the training of Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. The maker of the sights, Trijicon, has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army.

U.S. military rules specifically prohibit the proselytizing of any religion in Iraq or Afghanistan and were drawn up in order to prevent criticism that the U.S. was embarked on a religious "Crusade" in its war against al Qaeda and Iraqi insurgents.

One of the citations on the gun sights, 2COR4:6, is an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."[If it's an apparent reference, then it's not secret, is it?]

Other references include citations from the books of Revelation, Matthew and John dealing with Jesus as "the light of the world." John 8:12, referred to on the gun sights as JN8:12, reads, "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." [Stupid ABC doesn't realize that all the verses refer to 'light' which makes sense considering their sights are glow in the dark.]

Trijicon confirmed to ABCNews.com that it adds the biblical codes to the sights sold to the U.S. military. Tom Munson, director of sales and marketing for Trijicon, which is based in Wixom, Michigan, said the inscriptions "have always been there" and said there was nothing wrong or illegal with adding them. Munson said the issue was being raised by a group that is "not Christian." The company has said the practice began under its founder, Glyn Bindon, a devout Christian from South Africa who was killed in a 2003 plane crash.

'It violates the Constitution'
The company's vision is described on its Web site: "Guided by our values, we endeavor to have our products used wherever precision aiming solutions are required to protect individual freedom."

"We believe that America is great when its people are good," says the Web site. "This goodness has been based on Biblical standards throughout our history, and we will strive to follow those morals."

Spokespeople for the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps both said their services were unaware of the biblical markings. They said officials were discussing what steps, if any, to take in the wake of the ABCNews.com report. It is not known how many Trijicon sights are currently in use by the U.S. military.

The biblical references appear in the same type font and size as the model numbers on the company's Advanced Combat Optical Guides, called the ACOG.

A photo on a Department of Defense Web site shows Iraqi soldiers being trained by U.S. troops with a rifle equipped with the bible-coded sights.

"It's wrong, it violates the Constitution, it violates a number of federal laws," said Michael "Mikey" Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an advocacy group that seeks to preserve the separation of church and state in the military.
[Yeah, uh, no. Separation of Church and State is not in The Constitution.

However, this is.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

They are exercising their rights under The Constitution of The United States of America.]

'Firearms of Jesus Christ'
"It allows the Mujahedeen, the Taliban, al Qaeda and the insurrectionists and jihadists to claim they're being shot by Jesus rifles," he said.

Weinstein, an attorney and former Air Force officer, said many members of his group who currently serve in the military have complained about the markings on the sights. He also claims they've told him that commanders have referred to weapons with the sights as "spiritually transformed firearm of Jesus Christ."

He said coded biblical inscriptions play into the hands of "those who are calling this a Crusade."

According to a government contracting watchdog group, fedspending.org, Trijicon had more than $100 million in government contracts in fiscal year 2008. The Michigan company won a $33 million Pentagon contract in July, 2009 for a new machine gun optic, according to Defense Industry Daily. The company's earnings from the U.S. military jumped significantly after 2005, when it won a $660 million long-term contract to supply the Marine Corps with sights.

"This is probably the best example of violation of the separation of church and state in this country," said Weinstein. "It's literally pushing fundamentalist Christianity at the point of a gun against the people that we're fighting. We're emboldening an enemy."

Gee, let's see. If I had 'John 3:16' tattooed on my arm and was sent by the govt. to Iraq as a soldier, would I be shooting as a 'Jesus soldier'?

On MSNBC you would be considered such a thing.

and how many Muslim grunts know what 2COR4:6 mean, let alone most westerners, I'm guessing it's been going on for years and no one has noticed until now.

Well, ABC News obviously knew what it meant, and yet they tried to claim it's some sort of 'Jesus code.'

they are inscribed on "Acogs", I never noticed anything on mine, so I dont know ABC found it, beside those are considered sensitive items, so how could anyone get posession of one, sounds like a inside job to me.

I called the Trijicon Facility here in Michigan, and congratulated them for their 'hair'. From what they said, I was one of many.

We used to be more secular with our enemies.

Good movies are larger than life.
GI's used to write stuff like "Hi There" on munitions.
Since this got outed they're sending out kits to rub these inscriptions off.
We're not supposed to aknowledge we're fighting a religious war and that's what this was, one man's little religious "Hi There"

Oh that'll help. I'm sure that Al Qaeda will back off and go home as soon as we show them that we've erased the Bible verses from our scopes.

This is just absurd stupidity on a galactic scale. Worried about symbolism in a shooting war? Barf.

If it was up to me, I'd tell Al Qaeda that we smear pig's blood on the tip of every one of our rounds. Let's see how many of them come out to fight.

I could almost understand bible verses that talk about the vengeful God from the first testament but Jesus?
Wasn't he the ultimate peaceful love one's fellow man turn the other cheek guy.
It strikes me as out of place, twisted and ironic to have him ascribed to on armaments.
If he were alive he would sue for defamation.

Funny how the giver of life is used to justify killing with prejudice.

Al Queda can call out Allah Akbar or God is Great when they do their killing since that is their entire crackpot motivation to serve God  but we shouldn't bring ourselves to their medieval level.

You don't know much about Jesus then. He told the disciples to turn the other cheek when persecuted for His sake, but he also told them to arm themselves. Since we know that Jesus is in fact God, there is no need to separate the OT words of God from Jesus' words. In fact, Jesus talked about repentance and hell more than any other subject.

Luke 22:36 - 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
John 8:44 (Speaking to the Pharisees) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
He also got angry and whipped people...
John 2:13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
This is just absurd stupidity on a galactic scale like you said :p

That's a strong statement. Do you believe that we are not justified in defending ourselves from deadly attacks from our enemies? Do you believe that God would want us to allow our wives and children to be destroyed?

So Jesus was a reasonable guy who put up with some guff but didn't allow himself to be walked over.

Of course we are justified in defending ourselves againt those who (prejudicely) want to kill us.
Beyond the obvious and religious reason it is also a Darwinian one in survival of the fittest.
Turning the other cheek is merely an initial gesture offered to those who cross us and has it's limits.

Almost every army in history has marched with it's religion.
Hoping for the protection of God when you could be killed soon in battle is a natural emotion even if your faith is not strong.
The US however is founded upon an idea and ideals instead of race creed religion geography or language like most other countries.

One of the reasons (beyond their small number) that our american Muslims have not been acting up is because of greater religious tolerance and almost indulgence in this country.
The guy who owned the company that made these scopes did this cryptic scriptures reference on his own as a sneaky thing that took 15 years to surface in the media.
It is innapropriate as issued from the government as we advertize ourselves as a pluralistic inclusive society.
Soldiers having their crosses and other religious icons is personal and such an entirely different matter.
I watched your Private Ryan clip and have no quarrel with the sniper kissing his cross then using prayer and scripture to concentrate his discipline in firing.
It is very dramatic and entirely believable although he gets blown away by the tank at the end.
I'm sure you would be pleased owning one of these scripture engraved scopes if you had use for it.
This may cause an increase in value for these scopes.

You act like America's Christian heritage is something to be ashamed of. Those with your opinion are in the minority; unfortunately, they are also the loudest voices.

In this time and place advertizing our religion does not help us.

I'm currently in Baghdad, Iraq. When we caught wind of this story we grabbed the ACOG nearest and took a look. Its extremely small, but its there. The one we checked out had JN8:12 on it.

Again, why? Are the muslims going to suddenly pack up and go home because we remove some Bible verses?

I reject your 'medieval level' argument as nonsense. You were also wrong about Jesus being a pacifist.

Come up with something else.

It's a small thing but it has some propaganda value for Al Queda however in this case removing these cryptic inscriptions is akin to closing the barn door after the animals have escaped.
Removed or not the crusader propaganda value will remain.

Al Qaeda is an ankle biting enemy who we could absolutely annihilate if we truly had the political will. Instead, we're too afraid to offend muslims to fight the war effectively. We don't shoot at enemies who hole up in mosques and take cheap shots at us. We don't bomb cities because we're afraid of killing anybody who might be a civilian. We feed and clothe terrorists in Gitmo and give them civil rights while we prosecute our own soldiers when they do their jobs. We strip search Granny because we're afraid of being sued by some whacko imams who chant muslim prayers on plane flights.

All that, and Al Qaeda still wants to destroy us.

You're advocating that we bend over backwards in one more insignificant area. Never mind the spinelessness of your position. My point is that it won't make one bit of difference.

The reality is that to win this war we have to take a page from the Jeffersonian approach during the Barbary Wars. That means Saudi, Iran, Syria, and Pakistan.
