Is there anything I need to know before I start on this? Anything special that needs to be done? Any special tools I need? Any help would be appriciated thanks.

Make sure to cut an inch off the bump stops.

i definatly didnt do that when i did mine and wouldnt kno y u need to just make sure the hole in the bottom of the strut line up with the 4 bolts on top correctly otherwisw ur gonna have to take it apart to line it back up

Mark the position of the end of the springs on the top of the shock (or strut if you prefer) with a white grease pencil. That way you can line up the holes to the assembly. I did mine by myself. If you have help it will go much faster.

Ok, thanks for the help. So I am going to need a spring compressor? The guy I am going to be doing this with knows stuff about cars. He asked me if I had air ride suspension? I dont know. Do I? Its an 05 V8 if thats ant help. I dont know much about cars but I am trying to learn.

You cannot do the exchance WITHOUT a spring compressor.. I read somewhere where one person used the weight of the car to compress the springs.. blah blah blah.. STUPID IDEA!!

Eliot, no you won't need another jack. You take the wheel assembly (being the tire and the wheel/rim) off.. That's the ONLY way you can get to the shock/strut bolts. Just jack up the car like as if you were going to change a tire.

You can borrow a spring compressor from Autozone and just leave a deposit. I'm sure there's other places that do the same too. Make sure you ask how to properly use it otherwise it might slip off and launching the spring at your head.

Jack up the car and put it on stands, dont just do the work with the jack supporting the car. You take the tire "with" the wheel off and then what you let the rest hang while your changeing the springs, no you support that also. Who the hell wouldnt expect to have to take the wheel itself off?

??? Eliot what are you talking about? who are you directing that to?

You asked if you need another jack.. From what I got, you were talking about two jacks per side. I was telling you that you only need one jack per side, leaving the car on the jack as you work. You obviously didn't understand the answer that I gave you. And if your talking about the portion of the suspension that is the rotor/caliper.. No you don't have to support it.
Here's a tip for you:
Over the past week or two I've been reading your posts. You lash out alot like you have some chip on your shoulder or that you have something to prove.
1) If you don't understand. Ask again.
2) If you don't want to listen, do a search on it. There are 1000's of threads about lowering your car. Some of us even have documented write ups that would me more than happy to pass on to you.
3) If you don't like the answer. Don't be an ass and give a 5th grade retort like you did in the above post.

The others and myself on this forum will be more than happy to give you all the advice on questions that you might have. Not all the answers are "good" or "work for you" but it's more info than what you had before.

No harm done here, just calm down bro. We're all here for the same reason.

Sorry if I may have offended you but this is what I asked.

Would you not need one to jack up the car and then one to support the assembly. By this I mean one to hold up the area behind the wheel so that when you take the suspension appart it dont just fall to the ground. You take off the bolts and then lower the shocks/struts till they can be removed with out harming them and allowing them to fall.

I then realized that it would be best to hold the car up with a jack stand and use that jack for the suspension. I wouldnt want it to fall on the ground would you? I also would not like to have a jack slip out of a 4,000lb. car and have that fall either.

Another is that I have only been here for a very few days, not a week or two. Some one else needs to listen and pay attention, dont get upset right away like as if you dont like the answers your self.
This is the internet you can never see the expresion or the mood the other person is in at the time, but when someone seems to make an attack then it is clear what the intention is so I may stand up for myself but at most times im not beeing rude at all.
Again no offense was ment.

I understood the answer but you did not understand my question. That was made clear in the following....

You asked if you need another jack.. From what I got, you were talking about two jacks per side. I was telling you that you only need one jack per side, leaving the car on the jack as you work. You obviously didn't understand the answer that I gave you.

I see that you have not been rude or you act out like someothers so I will expect you to only keep following the guide lines you set yourself.

I like those guidelines but unfortunatley you get the people that use that 5th grade retort all to offten on the internet, thats one thing some may have to learn to deal with.

I appreciate your comments and not beeing rude and again, no offense was ment to harm you either.

Also I used the word wheel assembly, that may have added confusion. I only ment everything the wheel bolts to after it is removed.

No harm done. But if you had just put this as your first question instead of thinking we would read your mind, it would have be all good.

What annoys me is when noobs come in and start blasting out comments as if they have something to prove, know something more than the people already on the forum . Or talking about mods that they themselves have never done. It just makes foes faster than friends.

But once again.. No you don't need to support the suspension after you take the shock/strut out and the wheel assembly.

Thank you. I just dont want to have things go wrong when I do it myself or see another member do something as well.

I may have been missinformed thanks for clearing that up for me.:headbang: I guess thats as close to a thumbs up as I can find, next to the one for the title.

If anyone wants them.. Here is a write up on how to change out the springs.
It's for my 2001, but it's for all 00-06 LS's..
It has three files.
1) taking off the front assembly
2) taking off the rear assembly
3) switching the springs

Nice job Nick, I must thank you for that. One thing tho is it all that necessary to discard all the hardware nuts?

IMPORTANt - for the front you have to pull the swaybar link in order to get the strut bolt out. The right way to do this is to get the ENTIRE front end up in the air at the same time. Otherwise you'll be wrestling with the swaybar links like crazy. This can be done w/2 jacks (on on each side) or a low profile jack under the crossmember that the steering rack bolts to.

Id rather just put the car up on stands. Thanks Beaups, Im glad I got involved on this thread, there is alot Im learning.

And I called it a strut bolt lol, before I get flamed its a "shock" bolt...:)

Na.. you don't have to throw away any of the old hardware.. I used the originals w/ no problem at all.
