ABS controller has begun to leak. Local car repair
shop I took it to, says the '87s (and similar) had a
lot of problems, design was changed later, and the
replacement would run to $2400 all told. So I thinks
to meself, a plain old power booster and proportioning
valve, maybe a couple of flare lines & tees, and screw
that.

Anybody gone down that road, know any likely organ
donor models, etc. that would mount up to studs and
pedal linkage, at least, for the booster/master? I can
deal with the plumbing plain enough I expect. Though
knowing the last year of T-bird to have non-ABS and
a proportioning valve (w/ rear discs?) would maybe be
a good place to start.

This is the only Ford in my life, so I don't have much
to go on, history-wise or parts-laying-about-wise.

I did the conversion on my old '85 before the internet was around...uGh!
That's back when ABS parts really were expensive!!!!!!!!!
The most useful thing about that link is that it mentions an adjustable proportioning valve. That's great!
As far as vaccum boosters, pretty much all fox body and many others will work. From mid 80's LTD's, mustangs, capris... You may have to do some adapting of lines and fittings.

HOWEVER ... ABS master cyls and EEC's are easy to come by and in the U-pull-it junk yards these days. I'm sure you could easily convert to a newer Mark VII ABS unit with little trouble and expense. Unless...you don't do the work yourself. ;)
