ac compresser

On the 96, every once in awhile on startup I can hear a "crunch noise" coming from the vicinity of the belt tensioner/ac compresser area. Any idea why, is the compressor on its way out?

I had a little noise in that area, replaced the serp belt idler...seemed to help.

serp belt idler- at least it is cheap and much easier to do than the a/c clutch.
My 95's went at 75k an my 98 makes noise on cold mornings at start up at 81K.
