ok so the advance trac how it drops clyinders and all is that cutting fuel or spark? id hope fuel so it doesnt foul the plugs. also up to how many clyinders will it drop? i spent yesterday in a 45 min trip that took 3 and a half hours and the trac light was on most of the time so that just kinda popped into my head. one other thing i noticed is that sometimes the trac kills so much power the car almost stalls but catches itself at 400 rpm does anyone elses do this? it also kinda sucks that you have to wait for the trac light to turn off before switching off the trac, so you have to actually stop and lose all my momentum. dont get me wrong it works good, real good with the stability and all very impressed.
 
I can't comment on 'how' it works. But I know that mine has never exhibited the 'almost stalling' that you describe.

I'm not 100% sure here but... my guess would be that it retards the timing on 00-02 engines, and modulates the brakes depending upon the corner needed. 03-up, due to being drive-by-wire, it just simply cuts throttle.
 
My traction light had been coming on for a few weeks before I got it fixed, I never noticed any loss of power.
 
It just limits power to the wheels so they do not spin. It is a inconvenience sometimes in the rain so I just turn it off.

It also straightens out the vehicle in a skid. I usually turn it off in the rain too, but it should be very helpful when on a snowy highway.
But to the original poster, I don't think that the system is working right if it's almost killing the engine.
 
I've never seen the engine close to stalling, but several times in the snow last year the traction control would cut power to the point I couldn't go faster than about 3mph.
 
If your AdvanceTrac is functioning correctly, it'll only cut power if the brakes are too hot or the differential braking isn't getting the job done by itself. When it cuts power, you'll definitely notice it--it's just like hitting the rev limiter--but just like hitting the rev limiter, it shouldn't be a prolonged experience. On the 2nd Gens, I believe Nate is correct, and it cuts the throttle (which would also kill/reduce the fuel flow and retard/cut the spark). On 1st Gens it probably kills/reduces the fuel flow and retards/cuts the spark, but I don't have any technical references to back up that theory.

mine has never almost died, but it does fall on its face when the light comes up...kinda like the car gets kicked in the balls...
 
i forgot to mention this whole thing was brought up from the huge snowstorm we had received that day lol when i said stalling it only happened because i was hitting the gas and the tires were just spinnin not goin no where. try it in that situation and tell me what happens haha

That sounds like normal operation in that situation (been there, done that, got the t-shirt and the coffee mug). One of the things that happens in that situation is that you'll hit the 3K RPM "out of gear/no traction" rev limiter. It really does feel weird, doesn't it?
