Any suggestions for an aftermarket head unit ?

Im tired of using the cd changer in the trunk....

Ive seen allot of people swap out the old double din units with new cd/dvd systems. But does this require the car to be completely rewired ?

I was hoping that I would just have to bypass my amp.

Thanks

In bypassing the amp, you'll want to use after market amps, which would require a rewire. I don't think you'd like ANY deck without the use of amps

With deleting the CD changer you'll want a deck with at least a USB port for an external drive. I'm pretty sure any deck with internal drives must be loaded via mwav disk

Yeah thats what I was afraid of. I didn't want to have to swap out the factory amp. But i guess it's needed if I want to put in a new double din unit. And the picture i used above is not my car. Just an example for people to see.

Have you ever heard of anyone using the original equipment with a new header unit though ?

It's always best and really simple to just rewire the whole system. Run new speaker wires, speakers, RCA jacks, the entire system. This way you wont need the amp, put your own in. The system will sound so much better.

If u don't want to deal with the hassle a lot of car audio shops can install the head unit u choose to buy for u. Or like every1 else just rewire and replace the whole thing.

I just swapped mine out yesterday on my 98.

I went with a JVC KDR740BT; a good entry level head unit.

And to utilize the factory AMP I used a PAC ROEM-FRD2 system interface:$34.95 with FREE Shipping.

Product Features:

System interface to replace factory installed receivers and integrate factory amplifiers.
Adjustable 4-channel RCA outputs that provide Line Level Matching
Isolated transformer inputs and outputs
Trigger wire included.
Maintains correct phasing
20-20000 Hz outputs.

This made it super easy; truly Plug and Play.

NOTE: I did have to move 4 of the pins on the Black Connector over 4 spaces to make the rear speakers work. There is a note about it and a diagram showing how to do this in the instructions that come with it.

The sound is great & the install was a breeze. The hardest part of the whole thing was moving the 4 pins over in the black connector!

Total installation time including removing stock radio, wiring up the new radio to the harness, swapping over the 4 pins in the black connector, and installing the whole thing was less than 1 hour.

Total cost: $154.21 :)
