i'm purchasing an alpine cda 9856 headunit tomorrow and i am trying to decide what to do for my install. I read the artice about installation in the tech section but it wasnt as indepth as i had hoped for. Has anyone on here done their instal themselves? how hard was it to get the vent panels off? i am pretty confident that i can do the installonce i get the dash panels off, but i dont know how hard that will be. If anyone here has installed their headunit your help would be appreciated. Or if there is a website that i can get the info that would be good too. Thanks
Chris

the vents just pop off. real simple. then theres 4 screws holding the HU in. but first you have take out the ashtray, it just pops out too. then take out the heated seat unit. 2 screws. then you can take out the HU. its real simple. i havent installed a HU myself but i did hook up a remote wire. If i missed anything im sure people will chime in.

yea, like Daddy said, its real easy... the vent piece pops right off, but you should start with the ash tray first... pop the wood trim piece off and unscrew the 2 screws behind it and pop out the ash tray and disconnect the heated seat wires... then there is s bolts on top and 2 bolts on bottom that hold the headunit and climate control together... the climate control comes apart once you have that whole section out... good luck!

where do i try and pop the vent peiece off? whats the strongest part of it? i dont want to try from a weak part and snap it. I might be overly worried about this because i got the car last week. and ive washed it every day so im "overprotective" thanks lenn and daddy

btw its an '03 so my heated seat unit is different from yours its not on the side of the ash tray.

your setup might be different if its an 03, so im not sure ... you might wanna wait for somebody with an 03+ to give you information on this before you start anything... sorry didnt kno you had an 03

It's pretty simple. First just pop off the vents on top. Remove the two 8mm bolts. Take the trim piece around the shifter off. You will see two 7mm screws holding the ashtray in, remove those and remove the ashtray. Then you will see two screws holding the center dash on at the bottom, remove those then the whole center piece (heater control, radio) will come out as one.

Hey buddy welcome to LVC. I just opened up my dash the other day. I have a 2004 but do not have the heated seats... it should not matter much. On my unit the dash vents are held at the bottom by two push in snaps. Insert a knife or other flat thin object (I used a metal ruler) between the radio and vent piece and disengage the snaps. After that the vent piece just pulls right out.

note: my vent piece does not have the 4 buttons for computer control (fuel, reset, setup, status) if yours does you may have to disconnect them after pulling the vent piece.

I would not touch the HU on my Ls if it was not double din touch screen navigation going in. It looks so tacky and cheap putting in a measly sub 500 HU into that big space in an LS. It totally degrades its class in every way as do all of these ugly rims i am seeing. And I'm not somew old fart trying to keep classy and luxurious and such im 19. I just dont understand.

I have no idea what you're putting in personally, dont feel like searching, but I had to vent.
