My stock tach went bad (stops at 3000 rpm) on ,my 87 MKVII so I decided it is time for a aftermarket tach - who btw, fits right on the steering collum and covers the old tach. I was wondering from were I need to get the input. I was reading somewere that I should use the green/yellow wire going into the ignition coil. Also, were would be a good place to bring the wire into the passanger compartment.

thanks

Mario

That's where I tapped into the ignition coil for my shift light. You can bring the wire through the rubber grommet on the passenger side firewall. Poke a hole through it with a big screwdriver and snake it through (I use a metal hanger). It's kinda of a tight fight behind the dash - just pull down the glove box and you'll be able to fish it through. Good luck.

well, it was very easy and turned out great ... I love these old 5.0 engines - so easy to deal with ... :L

I notice you've sitll got the 85 MPH speedo, just like me (an '89 LSC). Know of any source for a 120 MPH or 140 MPH speedo? Or a set of gauges that are white faced? The dash lighting on mine is positively dismal. The interior lights are pretty dim too. One time, for about a week, I had one rear "C" pillar light that was bright enough to be acceptable, but as unexplanably as it brightened, it dimmed back to original. I wonder if there's a "secret" to be learned here.

You can find those 120mph speedo set-ups on eBay - that's where I got mine a few years ago.

The dim dash lighting may be the light switch if it's dimming and brightening on you like that. Could also be the alternator, but I'd check out/clean/replace that dimmer switch first.

Thanks. I'll be looking there tonight. Did you have to change the speedo tranny gear too?

The 120mph speedos were found on 90-92 models. They are "plug and play" with no need to change a speedo gear. Now if you swap your rear end, that's a different story.

as NYC LSC said, ebay is the place, I just bought mine 2 days ago for $50.00 on ebay since my speedo is showing 5mph more than i should be as well.

Junkyards people! Junkyards! Ebay, geez. WHy take a chance on getting scammed if you don't have to? Plus, taking it out yourself, will help immensely when you go to install it in yours. Free experience.
