Hey guys. Just before I left town I started to get a flashing airbag light and it flashes as a 3-2 code 32. Anybody know what that is? It's a hard fault that occurs on each start up. Disconnection of the battery didn't clear it. It happened right after changing my DS brake light but I don't see how that could have done it. I think it was just coincedence. Thanks for any help.

Does your cruise control work fine?? If it doesn't then that's the clock spring mechanism for sure.

Alldata lists this. It doesn't show a 32 code.

ELECTRICAL - SIDE AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC CODES
(DTC) B1994 AND/OR B1998 - VEHICLES BUILT
BEFORE 2/18/02 ONLY

LINCOLN:
2000-2002 LS

Article 01-25-2 is being republished in its entirety to update the Service Parts used.

ISSUE

On some vehicles built before 2/18/02 the Air Bag Warning Lamp may illuminate with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1994 (Driver - Side Air Bag Circuit High Resistance) and/or B1998 (Passenger - Side Air Bag Circuit High Resistance) stored. This may be caused by a broken circuit to the Side Impact Air Bags.

ACTION

Repair the broken circuit(s) by installing service connector and pigtail, part number 2W4Z-14S411-BA. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check the Air Bag Restraint Control Module (RCM) for DTCs. If DTCs B1994 and/or B1998 are present, continue with this Service Procedure. These DTCs may be stored as either Intermittent or Hard Fault codes.

2. The suspect circuits are part of the 14A005 vehicle electrical harness that enters the passenger compartment through an opening in the carpet below each front seat. The break may occur slightly above or inside the end of the protective conduit near the Air Bag connector for the seat (Figure 1).

3. Move the seat to the full forward position. Inspect the suspect circuits for breakage depending on DTC observed during self test:

a. B1994 - Inspect circuits 30S-JA37 & 31S-JA37 at C316 under the Drivers Seat.

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Manual Section 501-20B.
b. B1998 - Inspect circuits 30S-JA38 & 31S-JA38 at C314 under the Passenger Seat. Refer to Wiring Diagrams Manual Section 501-20B.

CAUTION FOLLOW THE AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE BEFORE CONTINUING WITH THIS ARTICLE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 501-20B.

4. Remove the seat on affected side of the vehicle to gain access to the broken wiring. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual Section 501-10.

5. Cut one of the wires in the affected harness to a length of 1.5" from the base of the take-out. Cut the other wire to a length of 3.5" from the base of the take-out. By stagger cutting the wires this will provide 2 "of clearance between each splice (Figure 2). Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual Section 501-20B, General Procedures - Wiring Repair, for further details.

NOTE THE OVERALL LENGTH OF THE REPAIRED HARNESS SHOULD BE 6" - 6.5 "(BASE OF THE TAKE-OUT TO THE END OF CONNECTOR). IF THE REPAIRED HARNESS IS SHORTER THAN THIS LENGTH, DAMAGE MAY RESULT FROM THE HARNESS BEING PULLED APART DURING NORMAL SEAT TRAVEL.

NOTE THE REPAIR CONNECTOR AND PIGTAIL WIRING COLORS ARE DUPLICATED FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE VEHICLE WIRING. IF THIS REPAIR IS PERFORMED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO BE SURE THE CORRECT WIRES ARE SPLICED DURING THIS PROCEDURE.

6. Trim the repair connector and pigtail, part number 2W4Z-145411-BA, in a staggered fashion that matches the repair on the vehicle harness.

7. Splice in the repair connector using two (2) Butt-Splice connectors, part number F2AZ-14488-A. This Butt-Splice connector is heat shrinking nylon, 18-22 Gauge, water-proof and transparent, approved for Air Bag system wiring repairs.

8. Wrap the repaired circuits in electrical tape from the take-out to within 1/2" from the connector.

9. Install the seat.

10. Follow the Air Bag Reactivation procedure. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual Section 501-20B.

11. Operate the seat in the full range of motion, including Easy Access/East Out feature (if equipped) on the Drivers Seat, checking for free movement for the harness.

12. Clear DTCs from the Air Bag RCM.

I don't have the codes in front of me now but I'm not sure 32 is a side airbag code?

I don't know what year your car is, but 32 is not one of the listed LFCs (Lamp Fault Code) in the 2004 service manual. Since it is being flashed out on the SRS fault light, then it must be SRS related. (Note, don't confuse this with the four digit DTC B code that you would get by plugging in a scan tool to the car's diagnostic port.) I would strongly suggest that you find the factory service manual for your car, find the trouble code, and follow the flow chart for finding the exact problem. There are a large number of expensive (and some dangerous) parts to be messing with without knowing what you are doing.

Bringing back to life this old thread....sorry.

I'm in the middle of doing the clock spring job, and as I just removed the lower foot panel, this wire
dropped to the floor. It wasn't connected to anything I could see. Can anyone enlighten me as to what
this wire is ? Is it part of my code 32, and, I'm replacing the clock spring for nothing ?

Thanks for any quick help, since, I'm going back outside right now to continue the job.
Sorry, pic isn't that great.

Replacing clock spring took care of my code 32. :D

Now, after driving the car for a few weeks, I hadn't really checked all of the functions on my steering wheel. I noticed that what should be the station seeking control (the upper one), it only increases volume. So I now find myself with 2 rising volume controls, one station surfing control. Not that it's a big deal to me, but was just curious if I now had a green card problem, the one that these controls are connected to, or, this new clock spring was also defective ?

If that's the only issue with the radio controls, I'd bet on it being the button assembly ("green card problem.")

Ok, thanks Joe. I don't remember ever having had read anything on this subject here on the forum. Has anyone
ever had to replace the assembly ?

I had the resume button on the cruise control button board fail. It's working fine after replacing the assembly.
