Is it possible to replace the bearings in the alternator? See some listed on ebay. Would like to try that route before getting a used one. Currently out of service since I can literally smell the belt burning from mine already..

Not far from me, here in Metro Detroit, there's a place that rebuilds alternators and such. If you can find such a place, they'll probably rebuild your alternator for less than buying one from one of the chain stores.

I thought it was only the front bearing that would be needed. First time doing one so no clue what I would need besides the obvious bearing. You mention a number of parts. If I bring to a local shop I already know it will probably be the same price or more then a used one will run me. Hopefully not more than a rebuilt one would..

Right, just letting you know that if you want to get neck deep into rebuilding alternators, some of the LS's parts are common, but some aren't.

The front bearing is a common failure, so that's a good start. Replacing it is super simple. There are plenty of videos for rebuilding a Ford 6G alternator out there.

The rear bearing can absolutely fail as well. I ruined two or three before I got one to work. Still didn't come out great, but it worked. That tolerance ring design is f'n terrible.
