Arizona is taking the lead to finally put some teeth in the immigration bill that the federal government seems not able to do.
Local police will be given the authority to (under certain circumstances) detain and ask for proof of the right to be in the country.
Personally I think this is LONG, LONG, OVERDUE.
I am glad to see somone has finally taken the bull by the horns with this illegal immigration fiasco going on in the southwest.
It is going on throughout the country and Arazona may well be the model for the other states plagued with this problem.
Of cource the ACLU and the rest of the cry babies will cry foul and raise the issue of racial profiling.
One only has to take a realistic look at the escallating problem of illegal entrance into this country.
For years it has been out of control, costing the effected states billions of dollars in aid too these illegals in the form of housing, education, and medical expense.
I hope this proves to be a success in Arizona so that other states can begin similar programs.
Bob.

Mexico is literally on the verge of becoming a failed state.
When that day comes, the violence and anarchy is going come flooding over the border.

Lock and load, phasers set to max aperture!

It will be easy in Arizona, they just passed a totally open concealed weapons law. No permit, no background check, nothing. Anyone over 21 can carry a concealed weapon.

Um...

What does 'totally open concealed' mean?

Is that the same as a 'totally blue dog Democrat?'

By the way, Vermont has had a universal conceal carry law for years. Lowest crime rates in the nation, despite bordering New York.

I think Alaska has a similar law...

Not quite so low... but not bad on crime rate either.

I was just wondering how the police in Arizona feel about pulling over anyone and demanding proof of citizenship, with the new gun laws in effect.

No you weren't. I guarantee you were NOT wondering how some cops feel about something.

Did you wonder how the New Orleans cops felt about going around confiscating guns house to house right after Hurricane Katrina?

Foss, where does this ability to read my mind come from?

I know lots of police officers - I do think about this... I can also tell you that I bet the police and trooopers in Arizona weren't really happy with their new conceal law, I don't even have to look that up.

I know some police officers as well, and I've asked them about what they think of conceal/carry, and they have absolutely no problem with it. They know that it deters crime.

/my anecdotal evidence cancels out yours

Well, the crybabies are already comming out of the woodwork screaming racial profiling.
They are stating, without reading the law, people's civil rights will be in question.
I am not sure just who's civil rights they are referring too, but my guess is the illegal aliens.
That being the case, where in out constitutioon does it say non citizens have ANY rights, let alone civil ones?
A few years ago, on another site, and more recently on the Bill Orielly show, I comemted that I think the only way to stop the influx of illegals comming from the southern border is to place the military on the border, and along with that, giant billboards facing Mexico, stating (in spanish)"IF YOU CROSS INTO THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY, YOU WILL BE SHOT ON THE SPOT, AND GO HOME IN A BODY BAG".
For too many years the federal government has dragged it's a$$ when it comes to enforcing the immigration laws, and now the states can no longer affored to support these people.
They keep comming, and there is no stop in sight.
Like any unwanted infiltration, get rid of enough of them, and the rest will get the message.
Tough times call for tough steps, and arming the border is one thing that WILL work.
If we continue to do nothing, that drug war going on now in Mexico will seep it's way across to this country, and at that point the military will have to intervene.
I say, cut out the cancer now with the military, and get it over once and for all.
It is only a matter of time when the rest of the border states follow Arizona's lead.

Bob.
Just stop giving them free money and healthcare. No more anchor babies. That will solve half the problem.

Then, allow illegals to sue their employers for underpayment of the minimum wage.

Presto, problem solved.

Good luck getting California to follow with all the blow-hards on the state gov. Maybe this election will change something, and hopefully not for the worse like our president.

There is one candidate running for governor who understands that enough is enough.
He has said that if the state legislature doesn't stop funding illegal aliens in this state that he, if elected would make sure it is put on the ballot as a ballot proposition.
People not only in California are fed up with the state governments funding these illegals, that they are now more than willing to see steps taken like Arazona did this past week.
I belive the rest of the states are in a holding pattern waiting to see how Arizona will defend the policy in the courts.
Some of the cry babies are talking about boycotting Arazona (including our overly stupid, incompitent governor here in Ca.)
Demonstrations are planned in other states to show discontent with the ruling, but in the long end, it is at least a start to something the federal government should have been doing al along.
When one's back is up against the wall , one must take drastic action to retalliate.
Arazona, like the rest of the states with this illegal alien problem, is going broke trying too humanely take care of these people, and somehow that little fact is being overlooked by the federal government, and all the cry babies who think illegal should be able to stay and drain the states even more.
There is a cancer in this country, and the ONLY way it will ever be cured is for the military to get tough with illegal aliens who flood our borders.
That is a start.
State governments, especially the ones here in the south west must stop catering to these illegals.
They must stop housing them, educating them, feeding them, and providing access to free medical care.
They must stop making it "comfortable" for them to be here, PERIOD.
Businesses that hire them should bemade to stop imediately, or be shut down.
One company in particular (Home Depot)should be made to stop allowing these illegals from gathering on their property in search of work.
What is needed is a deterrent to make it much harder for them to succeed in this country.
Talk about boycotting, that is a place that should be boycotted for allowing these illegals to congrigate on their property.
Immigration policy is a joke.
Why isn't ICE patrolling areas like Home Depot, and rounding these illegals up and sending them back to their countries?
Cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles should loose all federal funding until they put an end to their "sanchuary city "status.
Tax excemptions should be withheld from the catholic church for the same reason.
It is being made too easy for these illegals to not only infiltrate our country, but to sustain themselves once here.
It needs to end.
Bob.
