This is my first Lincoln and the automatic brake release doesn't work. The brakes are fine and the parking brake manual release works just fine. I rarely have any occasion to use the parking brake so it's not a big deal, but since the car is so nice I would love to fix it if it's not allot of trouble. Any ideas would be welcome.
Thanks,
John

It's the vacuum line. It's probably leaking at the shifter. Get into the center console and you should be able to trace out the leak.

Console

Thank You, but how exactly do you access the hose in the console?
Thanks,
John

Happened on mine. Problem was compounded when I converted to the five speed. lol I ended up just dealing with it. The auto release doesn't work on my town car either.

It won't work with a five speed, since the vacuum hose will no longer be connected to the shifter.

lol, unfortunately there are a few sacrifices when adding a 5-speed. Aside from the parking brake, you also lose the cruise control. :(

No you don't. There is nothing to do with the automatic that affects cruise control. The problem people have is when they do the MAF conversion. In which case you have to get a stand alone cruise off an older Mark VII or a V8 mustang or the like. Mine worked all the way up until I found out that it was causing a battery draw. I fixed the problem and actually have the module mounted in the trunk next to an auxiliary fuse box I have fabbed in there. Yeah, my car is slightly custom.

Not exactly. The MAF does kill the cruise control, but a simply "addition" of the stock computer to a few key pins puts the cruise back into working condition. The 5-speed has the neutral safety switch, as well as another connection, that affects the cruise control operation. That said, a stand-alone cruise control system should work around the issues with the stock system that is on the 88+ cars with both MAF and CC.

I just jumped the neutral safety switch and cut it out of the cruise circuits if they were there and walla. I don't have my EVTM right here but if I did I could tell you how to get around everything. I don't remember exactly but if it's something that concerns you, you can hook the neutral safety switch to a clutch switch and it will server the same purpose. The other two wires are your reverse lights. I know about the addition of the stock computer, but that to me complicates things and makes everything cluttered. Too much going on in one spot. I like my stuff to look clean. Hence the reason I relocated my stand alone to the trunk. Out of sight, out of mind. I just had to make a wire harness to get it back there, but a lot of the circuits I needed were already there. You'll find that under my dash is extremely clean. Cleaner than stock even! The only thing is where the computer is is a little garbled because I swapped the body/ABS harness with the PCM harness where they go through the fire wall. This allowed me to run the body/ABS harness on the outside of the front frame rails to clean up the engine compartment for the turbos. EEK! I could go on all day about the wiring in that thing. (electrical is my specialty lol) but I think I'll stop now. LOL, all we are talking about is cruise!

Thanks as usual Josh

Thanks for some real help Josh. How to get in there was obviously my question,
but some people like Frogman have nothing better to do than try to put people down. I'm sorry I'm not a super mechanic like he is.

No worries, dude. I'm just hear to help...whereas a lot of people just run around forums to deride others and feel that they are superior. The purpose of places like this is in my opinion, plain-and-simple, to help others; everybody has to start somewhere. I guess it's all what you make of it.

It's the internet. Serious business. And yeah, to answer how you access the shifter you just unscrew the lock bezel and pull up. Not hard. As far the other stuff. Take it all with a grain of salt. If you don't want to hear about other ways to get around things just skip past. Just don't say something can't be done is all.:Beer

Oh yea, it's a '92, so that lock bezel has to be unscrewed. Good catch. the '90+ had that "nut" on the center console lock.

Thank You!!!

I just got around to fixing the auto parking brake release and the vacuum line was just disconnected. I just put it back in securely, tested it before putting the console back together and it works as good as new now ! Josh, I want to thank both you and hotrod for your help in fixing this problem. I've had allot of cars, but this is a pristine condition 92 LSC SE with 46k on it and it is fast becoming one of my favorite cars. This car is different from any cars I've previously owned. I had a 69 MACH I Cobra Jet, 70 MACH I 351, 71 BOSS 351 and the one I sold in 78 that is my biggest regret of all, a mint 70 BOSS 429 Grabber Green Mustang with 28K on it, etc . That has to go under the heading of "WHAT WAS I THINKING" ? Answer, I was young and obviously wasn't. Thanks again guys, this is really a great group here.
God Bless,
John
