I just got an AVIC-D1 unit for Christmas and I have a few questions.

First the HU has an input for a hardwired remote. Can I hook up my steering wheel controls to this input? If so what else is needed to install to this input? Or is this not possible and I need to purchase the PAC device.

Another question about the Avic, it's supposed to have video input. Does anyone know what kind of input this is? Are they RCA?

My ultimate plan was to purchase an iPod video and then hook it into the HU via the video input. This way I can have mobile video on the iPod, or I can keep the same connection and just listen to music from the iPod. Does anyone know if this plan will work? Are there any setbacks or disadvantages to doing this?

yes you can get a pac part that will plug into the back of the radio and make use of your steering wheel controls. the video input is RCA inputs. since the d-1 does not have a dvd player on board. also for the video playing, you can't watch any video source on the screen wile driving unless you plug another wine into the harness and ground it.. (if you need more info just let me know). but from what you are trying to do it should work fine.

Yea I know about the extra wire into the harness issue. So the HU just has a menu option for external source and then the data will come from the iPod correct? It won't matter if its just sending music or video right? If just music it will just show a black screen right?

What part do I need to hardwire the steering wheel controls into the unit?

no it will show whatever is on your ipod screen. your ipod screen goes blank and whatever was on your ipod screen will be showen on the d1. the part for the steering wheel is made by PAC I think you can find these parts at mom and pops shops. the price is around 100 - 150 retail but cost is about 50- 60

Which Pac device will I need? Also where did you guys install your the atenna? I really don't want to put this thing on the outside of the car.

hey how did the install on that D1 come? lets see some pics of that installed... im thinkin about switchin out my AVIC-N1 for a D1... is that smart or should i just keep the N1?

Did you ever get this installed? I just bought one and am wondering what I'm in for. Did you figure out what PAC device you needed for the steering wheel controls? Lets see some pics.:) Good luck.

Put the antenna by the break light in the rear window. I have my xm antenna there and it works like a champ.
