1998 Lincoln Mark VIII with 82K

Car drove fine until my last fill-up. Used same gas station for many months. Filled up with 93. When I got to the HWY, the car started shaking like crazy.

Checked codes:

P0304
P0308

Missfire in 4th and 8th. Where exactly are they?

Any suggistion to what it might be?

Is it time for tune up?

I also checked fuel injectors' resistance. It ranges from 15.3-15.7

Any help is appreciated.

Eugene

I'm still dealing with the issue myself on my '98.

IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor Or the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor going bad.

It is obvious it is running really rich which is why you fouled 4 and 8.

Did the car start up right away or did you have to crank?
Could be the computer needs to be reflashed to deal with the colder weather. That is what I am being told.
It hasn't been cold enough to recreate my no-start problem since I changed the plugs to Autolite 764's unfortunately.
It starts right away now (so far) but I can tell it is running rich.

Whatever I find out or you find out, let's share the results with each other. I know 5 other guys that are in the same boat as we are. Seems to be just with the '98's at this point so it will make alot of sense for all of us once we narrow it down.

Could it be a fuel injector problem? I almost ran out of gas before the gas station. Perhaps, something got into the fuel line.

Where is 4 & 8 located on the engine? I don't have much experience with this type of engine. I'll test injectors tomorrow. I have two Brand New ones in the shop.

I'll spend some time with it tomorrow or Saturday. Will let you know any findings.

if i recall from looking at a model, its (looking at the motor from front) 4 right infront of your left, and 8 in the back. dont even begin to do work on my word on this, because it was a while back, and i couldnt find the diagram for ya. but that would be the first place id check.

Ok the first thing i would do is replace the plugs using uridium core plugs. and while you are at it check all the rubber boots between the coils and the plugs for any cracks. I had that same issue right about 85k on cylinders 1 and 3. So new plugs and boots for about $150 and never had a problem after that

i believe 4 and 8 are the rear most cylinders. if you are standing in front of the car 4 is left rear and 8 is right rear i am reasonably sure of this.

ITS either 02's or plugs, or plug wires, or fuel injectors, or fuel pump, or bad maf, or bad computer....start looking it costs money!!! i have had a bad one too since i got the car, and every time i replace one of em it runs good and then about a month later it starts up again!

Dropped it at the shop few days ago. I'll starts with tune-up. Injectors checked ok. We'll see what happens

Check the boots inside the valve covers. That's what it was on my 97 Lsc. From inside the car looking out the widshield on your right are 1-4 from front bumper to back and on left are 5-8 from front bumper.Almost possitive this is correct.I had misfire code cyl#7 and it was drivers side 3rd back. The boots are about $15.00 retail and most Lincoln dealers stock them as that was a common problem. My local dealer said he sells about 8 a week

Just the other day when i started my 96 it was running rough and the check engine light started blinking. Now the light is always on and the engine runs a little rough. How do you check for the error codes? (I dont have my owners manual) Thanks for any input.

Eugene,

Not sure if this helps but in a span of 3 months last summer I needed to replace the #3, #6 and #7 coils (never 2 at a time though)......mechanic told me (and I saw them) that the plastic insulators will crack therefore letting the spark "escape" out the side of the coil and not firing the cylinder......I have a 98 LSC CE and he seemed very sure that this was a 1998 specific problem.......Good luck and let us know......
