Sorry if this is a repost, but I found an alternative to our group 66 battery today.

Our local Batteries Plus carries group 65 batteries WITH a vent :). They have a 675 CCA model for around $80, and a 880 CCA model for around $95.

They were out of the 880 CCA version, but they ordered one for me and I will be picking it up tonight. I will update if there are any issues.

It is a Deka battery, but it is sold as a Rayovac. The 880 CCA model is a Rayovac Maximum. I posted a typo last night. The battery will be in this afternoon, so I will verify that the vent is actually present. They had a standard 675 CCA on stock and it did have a vent. I have been assured that the Maximum will also.

That's pretty kewl. My Battery took a dump Christmas eve morning and NOBODY was open except for Advance, Autozone Sears and Walmart. Walmart was the only place that showed a battery in stock and the price was $78. Little did I realize was that their computer called out a 65 series battery without a vent and I didn't look at it until I took my car to my mechanic to check my CEL problem on Monday morning.

Did the OP find out if there is a vent tube attachment on the Rayovac?

On another note, has anyone used the Odessey Battery that BatteriesPlus also shows as compatable? I know its expensive but has impressive stats. It appears that this battery claims to be ventless. From reading other threads here from people that appear to know batteries I guess they all vent in some way. Oddessey states theirs don't have "free acid" as they are an "absorbed acid" design. How can Odessey/BatteriesPlus get around liability (since they show the battery as compatable) on a ventless design for a battery inside the cabin compartment like the LS or is it in fact safe?

Also can anyone confirm Odessey makes the Sears Die Hard Platinum Battery?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Here is the link for what appears to be the Die Hard Platinum version of the Odyssey listed for the LS. Sears does not show it LS comaptable (do they have more consevative Lawyers than Odyssey and BatteriesPlus?). If it would in fact be a safe install this would save some $ and Sears has good sales fairly often.

I think that all of us are being overly paranoid. Any vented hydrogen will probably escape every time you open the door because the trunk is not sealed from the passenger compartment. I am just going the better same than sorry route. I do not know how much the Odyssey actually vents, but whatever battery you are comfortable with is probably fine. It all come down to your risk tolerance. There are plenty of people driving around with Wal-Mart batteries that don't even know that they are supposed to be vented.

Yeah, if I wouldn't have checked mine a couple days later, I wouldn't even have known. It does make me wonder though if Walmart can get it any type of trouble for saying they have a "replacement" battery that isn't vented.

When I checked with the Sears auto near me, they din't show a replacement battery for the LS.

I wonder also that maybe it's not as big a problem in the LS since the battery is in the trunk compared to some GM vehicles where the battery is under the seat. And maybe there will be more of a difference in the summer than the winter with the fumes, if any.

Pretty sure Odyssey batteries still need to be vented. Their documentation is horrible on the details, however, even confusing venting with leaking.
Any AGM, Gel, "Sealed", "Maintenance Free" and traditional flooded batteries can and do vent. In the first few cases it's just in case of an overcharge or other unusual condition.

There were only one or two battery manufacturers that made passenger compartment safe batteries without vents. Can't find the links at the moment, though.

Also note that on the typical "maintenance free" batteries with two vents, simply plugging one and venting the other may not be sufficient. Depends on the internal construction of the battery and whether or not gases can freely escape from either port.

Way paranoid. My gf's kid has a walmart battery in his Aurora and that's under the back seat. At our hunting camp, we have solar panels on the roof and a 12v system with inverter. Two walmart deep cycle batteries right in the living room with a charger that comes online when the generator is running. Been like this for years with no problems.

The battery relocation kits that the aftermarket places sell don't have provisions for vents.. so, imo, its not that big of a deal..
