Greetings to all, I am new to the site. In fact it is the pictures of my black Lincoln that are in the latest members garage uploads area. I don't have a great deal of automotive experience and have been gleaning a lot of useful information from you guys who are abviously experienced and well informed about these cars. I wanted to share my story and ask for advice/suggestions to a particular problem I have been having with my car that just won't go away and I want to address this issue before I proceed with any cosmetic or performance upgrades or before the dastardly emmissions test comes around. In addition I can see that accessing information from you guys like this is usefull to anyone who is willing to join our club.

The problem is that my CHECK ENGINE light is on. :Bang

I have had my car into my mechanics shop four times in the last two weeks to get this put right. The first time they replaced a PCV valve - $10 plus labor. The second time they replaced the EGR valve - $150 plus labor. The third time they said it was a leaking vacuum hose - replaced hoses $35 plus labor. The last time I took it in was yesterday and they had the car all day. They said that the ODBII code was the same as it was in the first place and that there were a number of possible root causes that they were looking into. When I went to pick up the car they told me that they believed the root cause to be related to vacuum and that when they removed the throttle body they found a lot of carbon build up, which they believed to be the cause. After cleaning the throttle body and connecting ports, replacing the gasket and reassembling for FREE they sent me on my way. They also explained that if this didn't fix it that I would probably need to replace the computer and that they didn't have a price on that right now.

On driving the car I detected a noticable difference in sound and performance and I was convinced that this was the end of my woes with this problem. :steering

By the time me and my girlfriend had finished dinner at our favarite Italian restaurant and got back on the road the bloody CHECK ENGINE light was back on. :slam

I am wondering if general carbon build up in the motor could be causing the problem and whether or not the sea foam stuff might help.

Anybody got any information/experience/solutions with this type of error code on a 97 MKVIII LSC?

Please help me get over this thing so I can get on with the fun stuff like mass air flow, performance chips, mufflers, boddy kits etc.

Thanks in advance for listening and for any input any of you gear heads may be able to offer.

:wrench

Ask them what the code is, then post it here. Don't go throwing money at it in hopes of fixing it...

Good luck!
