Howdy,

I know I'm not the only one to think of this, its kind of obvious, but I searched and turned up nothing so I'll spill it.
Basically we all know that the 4.6 DOHC in the MkVIII is virtually the same as the Cobra motor, the earlier ones with the oval port heads specifically. Why has no one thought about putting a 03-04 Cobra 4.6 DOHC supercharged engine in a MkVIII? I do mean swapping the entire engine not just the top end since you'd want the stronger bottom end and lower compression anyway. Take basically put the SC Cobra engine programming on a 98 MkVIII computer so you keep the tranny control since the cobra's were all sticks. Bolt up a flywheel off of a 4.6L truck motor for the auto bolt pattern. Update the backend with some pieces from a cobra or Thunderbird SC to beef the shafts and a one piece driveshaft (I busted a 2 piece in my 70 Riviera so I am always looking to ditch'm). From what I've read that should make the package more durable for some Unnaturally Aspirated power.
I know you'll have to mess with the hood and such to get the taller intake and such to clear the pullies but why does this idea seem to only live in my head? I found a nice 95 near me and my Regal is closing in on the magic GM 100K sickness so I've been browsing around for a possible replacement and the 3800SC, sick little motor thats too powerful for its own good, has got me hooked on booste so this sounds like a nice fusion, though I'll miss the rear doors of my Regal. Guess that brings up another question, think this would be any easier on a Town Car or Crown Vic/Grand Marquis?

Thanks for reading my insane musings and if you think I'm shaking the pot here... try the turbobuick board,

You mean like this?

Yeah... though thats not a completely stock setup if I'm looking at it right with the twin airtube. I couldn't find that anyone had done it or even brought it up. I'm still mulling the idea over, how much can you get for an about 100K mile 95 MkVIII engine? Any more information other than a tempting picture about this idea?

Thanks,

i've thought of it often, jus cant afford to do it jus yet..... still waiting for an 03 cobra to appear in a junkyard somewheres with the rear totalled and front end still in tact. That'd be great. :wave

There's a setup on eBay right now, currently $7k for the engine and tranny with all the intercooling stuff with only an hour left. While I'd like to be the first one to drop this kind of a project I'd love to see someonelse do it too.

I dont know if I'd go that far.Its very nice and truely one of kind BUT......

Oh it is up there in the rankings, but not the most incredible.
Maybe the most incredible factory backed Mark, but not the most incredible.

Chris, where is that Tattoo pic?

I cannot find it anywhere, not even in the movie folder from the movie I used it in?

Do you think a Gen1 or a Gen2 would make a better starting point for something like this? Personally I'm thinking Gen1, when you are adding all sorts of custom crap its better to have the least amount of factory stuff to go wrong. Though you have the lower hood line and weaker stock tranny, though I don't think even a fresh stock 98 tranny would hold the power. Anyway to use a tranny out of Mach 1 as they come with beefed 4R70W's? Anyway I like this line of thought. Biggest obsticals I see are the tranny durability, hood clearance and the computer. Does anyone know the difference between an OBDI harness and an OBDII harness enough to know if you can put an OBDII computer on an OBDI harness? Also how do you reprogram these cars for mods, is it EPROMs or internal flash?

Thanks,

Someone claims to have dropped an 03 Cobra motor into a Gen-2. But they are on another Lincoln board and have posted no pictures (kinda strange).

An 03/04 Cobra setup will cost around $11,000 brand new; and probably that much worth of work to get it installed and working properly...

I dont know where its at. I THOUGHT it was uploaded to the site but I dont have the ftp program on this computer anymore. If you could pm me what program it was and the log in info I'll browse through my folder.

I agree definately the best factory backed, and a magnificent example of what can be done with a little ingenuity.

I'm pretty sure you cant run an OBD2 computer on an OBD1 harness.

Check out jerrys tranny 101 on TCCOA for al the info you need to build the tranny to hold 600HP.
I had one built to Jerrys specs and it is behind a 460 RWHP Mark for over 10,000 miles now with zero problems.

Geno showing off his stuff again. Offer still stands Geno, you can come out here to Hawaii and stay at my place, and drive my Mark if I can have ur S/C Mark.... I even cook.

You're not the only one planning this.

Few things to consider, though.
Fn-10 k-member will have a tough time clearing the alternator and filter on the 03 engine. You have to relocate the alternator either where the a/c compressor is, or use the mark alternator, flip it around and mount it where the vortech would go. You will have to fab a new crossover tube, but it's not a big deal.

To run COP ignition you'll need eec-v computer, so obviously a 2nd gen mark viii is a better candidate. There is a boost sensor on the 03 engine, that tells the computer to retard timing in case of too high of boost and open up the built in bypass. That's what makes the 03 engine somewhat bulletproof. You can wire it with the knock sensors maybe, but it's something to consider.

Hood clearance will be an issue on 1st gen cars, and most likely on the 2nd gens as well. You can drop the engine 1/2" on shims, but it still might not be enough. I think this is the least of a problem though.

You will need custom headers made, since the exhaust ports are different on the 03 heads than the mark heads. I spoke with kooks and they can use a different flange with the mark viii jig, so that's taken care of.

To be honest, it would take a decent 2nd gen (say $8k), 03 cobra engine ($6-8k), some fab work and of course tuning. I'd say you're looking at around $20k for 03 cobra swapped Mark VIII once you have all the supporting mods. yeah, it would be cool as hell, but you can buy the damn cobra for almost that much.

One more thing; the combo will not put down the same numbers 03 cobras are showing due to auto trans. You might be better off getting a forged aluminum block, 03 heads (mach, cobra, aviator), intercooled KB blower for the 03 cobra. You should see 600rwhp, which will a lot more fun than a 600hp vortech setup.

Honestly thats fine with the power numbers being down. 600hp on a daily driver would be nuts!!! Especially up here in the snow. I love the little supercharged V6 in my Regal and I pretty much spend my day dreaming time thinking about cars so this was one of those kick it around ideas I've had off and on that finally got itching bad enough to scratch. The problem is that I'm looking to possiblly replace my current daily driver while keeping my current project of a Buick 4.1 turbo 6 in a 65 Riviera thats slowly moving along and like any American I have the need for instant gradification and I guess I take that out on the web boards posting crazy ideas and questions. I guess that since I'm on a custom kick with the Riviera I keep wanting to customize the replacements for the daily driver too, and having gearhead friends to egg you on doesn't help either. I think I'll keep dreaming while I need a daily driver and once I've got the work transportation taken care of and a project finished I'll pick up this idea or the crazy road racing tiny Buick that I've also been kicking around.

Thanks for the friendly ear,
